Roble Arts Gym was selected in August by the California Preservation Foundation to be one of 18 recipients of the group’s prestigious Preservation Design Awards.
The Arizona Cactus Garden, first planted in the 1880s for Jane and Leland Stanford, was maintained until the 1920s. Since 1997, however, volunteers have been working to restore the garden. Today, volunteers rally around their passion for cacti gardening and enjoy the beauty of the plants.
Such success stories won’t be echoed everywhere. On a planet with 7 billion humans and counting, wild places are necessarily eroding in the face of human need, despite the activism of conservation interests. For every bird colony fenced by a first world nation, millions of acres of rainforest will be cut down in developing countries.
