Heads turned last Saturday for sophomore wide receiver Brycen Tremayne’s standout submission to the season highlight reel.
By the final whistle, Stanford was celebrating a 41-31 victory on Homecoming weekend for its third win in the past four games.
The Class of 2014 will return to the Farm this weekend for its five-year reunion. Many of those Stanford alums probably have not watched much Cardinal football since their graduation. If they decide to attend Saturday’s Homecoming game against Arizona (4-3, 2-2 Pac-12), they might be stunned by what they see from this Stanford team (3-4, 2-3 Pac-12).
The task was too much for Stanford (3-4, 2-3 Pac-12) to handle with a third-string quarterback under center. Riding an eleven-game losing streak against the Cardinal, UCLA (2-5, 2-2 Pac-12) came into Stanford Stadium and captured its second win of the season in convincing fashion, 34-16.
Cameron Scarlett was handed the ball 33 times and obliterated his career-high with 151 rushing yards on the way to an upset victory over No. 15 Washington at home. With the third-string quarterback under center behind three freshman offensive linemen, the fifth-year running back ran out the clock with 51 fourth-quarter yards and to preserve the Cardinal lead.
Though the Cardinal allowed a 21-point advantage to evaporate, senior kicker Jet Toner nailed a 39-yard field goal with one second remaining on the clock to send Stanford home with a 31-28 victory on Saturday in Corvallis. (Photo: isiphotos.com)
As bad as the opening month of the season has been for Stanford football (1-3, 0-2 Pac-12), it could get worse. All it takes is a road loss to perennial Pac-12 North cellar dweller Oregon State (1-2, 0-0 Pac-12) this Saturday, and the negativity surrounding the program would reach an unprecedented fever pitch.
Stanford (1-2, 0-1 Pac-12) could not compete with No. 17 UCF (3-0, 0-0 AAC) and lost 45-27 on the road. Despite the Cardinal receiving the kickoff, the Knights scored twice in the first five minutes of the game, and Stanford never recovered.
