On Feb. 18, Stanford’s Board of Judicial Affairs declined to add military affiliation to the list of identities — including race, gender, socioeconomic status and more — explicitly protected under the Fundamental Standard. The University decision followed a request for the change nearly six months prior by Adam Behrendt ’19, president of the Stanford Undergraduate Veteran Association.
In its meeting on Thursday, the Faculty Senate heard reports on Stanford’s long range planning from representatives of the four area steering groups (ASGs) tasked with consolidating the proposals submitted to the University. Aubrie Lee ’14 found herself stuck on the second floor of Cummings Art Building. She had taken the elevator up to her class and planned to take the elevator back down afterwards–that is, before the elevator broke. She sat in her wheelchair, unsure of who to call. She tried the Diversity and Access Office, who rerouted her to a different number.
With relatively little public notice, the University made several alterations to its nondiscrimination policy in mid-February. According to Diversity and Access Office Director Rosa Gonzalez, the changes to the Statement on Nondiscrimination Policy were prompted by a “need” for modification and clarification and included only technical and administrative changes.
