The Brown Institute for Media Innovation has awarded its 2017-18 “Magic Grants” to 11 teams of innovators. A collaboration between the Columbia Journalism School and Stanford University’s School of Engineering, the Brown Institute was founded in 2012 and this year is looking to fund teams whose technological developments could transform the media landscape.
From drones acting as tour guides to mass-analyzed cookie recipes, the projects on display at the Brown Institute’s first ever media innovation showcase were anything but conventional. Funded by Brown’s year-long Magic Grants, interdisciplinary teams from Stanford and Columbia pioneered new techniques for every step of the storytelling process — from research tools for journalists to new ways of telling a story.
The Brown Institute for Media Innovation recently awarded seed funding to eight teams from Stanford and Columbia that aim to utilize technology to transform the production and use of media content, in the program’s second class of “Magic Grants.”
The David and Helen Gurley Brown Institute for Media Innovation — the result of a $30 million gift to the Stanford School of Engineering and the Columbia School of Journalism (J-School) from former Cosmopolitan editor Helen Gurley Brown — will be up and running on both campuses by the start of the 2012-13 academic year.
Stanford’s School of Engineering and Columbia’s Graduate School of Journalism announced Monday a new institute that will span both campuses and explore the relationship between technology and journalism.
