Postseason hopes raised

After a crushing six-game losing streak, with five of them coming at Sunken Diamond, Stanford found life again on the road. The Cardinal outhit the Golden Bears to sweep Cal in Berkeley, mounting a late-season charge in the hopes of a postseason berth.

On Friday night, senior starting pitcher Mark Appel tied the Stanford career strikeouts record en route to a 9-8 victory in his final start against the Cardinal’s cross-Bay rival.

Broncos pitcher shuts down Card

On Tuesday evening, the Cardinal (26-21, 11-13 Pac-12) hit rock bottom as it fell to Santa Clara (13-37, 0-21 WCC) by a score of 3-0 as Stanford extended its losing streak to six games, spanning arguably the most important stretch of its season. Stanford’s bats fell completely lifeless as Broncos senior righty Tommy Nance tossed a complete-game masterpiece and kept the Cardinal hitters from making solid contact all evening.

Baseball swept by Oregon State

There is a talent gap in the Pac-12. And for the first time in a few years, Stanford is clearly on the wrong side of it.

The Oregon State Beavers came into Sunken Diamond and mercilessly demonstrated why they are the class of the conference, dominating the Cardinal en route to a three-game sweep to put Stanford’s postseason hopes in doubt.

Baseball hosts California tonight

Stanford returns home after dropping two games on a road trip to Houston last weekend to face cross-Bay rival California on The Farm tonight. The Golden Bears enter this contest undefeated after a three game sweep of Michigan in Berkeley. Stanford’s pitchers have performed well so far, but the team will need better hitting to live up to its potential.
