With the calendar turning from January to February, a new season of Stanford softball has arrived on The Farm. The No. 20/22 Cardinal will attempt to build off of a successful 2013 campaign in which it finished with a 39-21 overall record, Stanford’s first winning mark in Pac-12 play since 2009. While the team aims to clinch its 17th consecutive NCAA tournament berth, the Card has its sights set on more than just a trip to the regionals.
It didn’t take long for the Stanford softball team to wash away the bad taste of a walk-off loss to UC-Davis. The No. 8 Cardinal returned to the Farm for its first home games of the year and went 4-1 overall on the weekend, winning the Stanford Nike Invitational title.
Senior pitcher Ashley Chinn took a shutout into the seventh and freshman left fielder Corey Hanewich hit a decisive base-clearing double as the No. 13 Stanford softball team downed visiting San Jose State at Smith Family Stadium yesterday.
Stanford softball went 4-1 at the Kajikawa Classic in Arizona last weekend, the only loss coming at the hands of Nebraska in extra innings. Now the Card is back on the road for this weekend’s UNLV Louisville Slugger Desert Classic in Las Vegas, where the competition promises to be even stiffer with the likes of No. 23 BYU, No. 9 Hawaii and No. 3 Tennessee all on the slate for Stanford.
