The Faculty Senate heard the culmination of two years of work by the Study on Undergraduate Education at Stanford (SUES) Thursday, a report of more than 100 pages that examines the methods and goals of a Stanford education.
For many Stanford students, the month of September signifies the last few carefree weeks of summer vacation to be spent without worrying about the start of classes looming in the not-so-distant future. However, during this time, many other students are already on campus hard at work at the Sophomore College (SoCo) and Arts Intensive programs.
The Study of Undergraduate Education at Stanford (SUES) served as the focal point of Thursday’s Faculty Senate meeting. History professor James Campbell ‘83 Ph.D. ‘89 and biology professor Susan McConnell, who jointly chair SUES, delivered a presentation on the shortcomings of the undergraduate curriculum and general solutions to these shortcomings.
Eight faculty members have been elected to the National Academy of Sciences (NAS), an honorific society of researchers in scientific and engineering fields who are “dedicated to the furtherance of science and technology,” according to its website. It is one of the highest honors an American researcher can receive.
