Amid disputes over use of the former Sigma Chi fraternity house at 550 Lasuen Mall, Stanford and the longtime landlords of the house have sued each other, court records reviewed by The Daily show.
A total of 114 students — 27 fewer than last year — did not receive housing assignments in the 2019-20 draw, according to Residential & Dining Enterprises (R&DE).
The former Sigma Chi fraternity house at 550 Lasuen Mall — currently a self-op — will be allocated to one or more University-recognized Greek organizations for the 2020-21 academic year.
The Theta Delta Chi (TDX) fraternity will lose its housing at the end of this school year, after the University found for the fourth year in a row that the group “needs improvements” to meet Stanford’s “Standards of Excellence” (SOE) governing reviews of Greek organizations. The fraternity plans to appeal the decision, and will receive a final outcome from Residential Education (ResEd) by Feb. 1.
Stanford’s Sigma Chi fraternity lost its charter Thursday, University officials confirmed to The Daily Friday evening.
The alleged drugging of several Stanford students by a non-Stanford student at the Sigma Chi fraternity house in January has motivated some Row houses to institute new practices to prevent future drugging incidents. Others, however, have not made such changes.
Though originally advertised as a “co-op,” the fraternity’s house will operate as a “self-op,” and will retain its chef next year.
In the 2018-2019 school year, the Sigma Chi house will become a tier-three residence and allow non-members to live in its Mayfield Avenue house. The change follows the conclusion of an investigation by Sigma Chi International during which the fraternity was barred from participating in spring recruitment, leaving them without a 2018 pledge class.
