After dropping two consecutive matches for the first time since April 2017, the No. 12 Stanford men’s tennis team (13-4) bounced back with a commanding 4-0 victory over the unranked Cal Poly Mustangs (9-7) on Thursday. The Mustangs were on a hot streak before running into the Cardinal, having won six out of their last seven dual matches this month.
In weekend that saw each team play two dual matches each, the Stanford men’s (11-2) and women’s (8-1) tennis teams played a total of 22 individual matches. They came out of the weekend with 21 wins.
Four doubles duos from the No. 5 Stanford men’s tennis team will compete in the 130th Annual Pacific Coast Doubles Championships this weekend at the La Jolla Beach and Tennis Club. The tournament is the second-oldest tennis event in the United States and features some of the top doubles teams in collegiate tennis.
The Stanford women’s and men’s tennis teams each grabbed home wins this past weekend in dual match play at Taube Family Tennis Stadium. The No. 4 Stanford women’s tennis team crushed the No. 7 Vanderbilt Commodores 6-1, and the No. 6 Stanford men’s tennis team came back from behind to take down the No. 40 California Golden Bears 4-2.
A 25-match unbeaten streak in collegiate tennis is unheard of, and yet Stanford women’s tennis (5-1) maintained that streak for over a year before a narrow defeat by Georgia last week.
The No. 10 Stanford men’s tennis team (7-2) fell to the No. 13 Virginia Cavaliers (9-2) last Friday in the first round of the ITA Division 1 National Men’s Team Indoor Championships. The weekend-long tournament was hosted by the University of Illinois and played at the Midtown Athletic Club in Chicago.
In a heartbreaking loss to No. 5 Georgia (6-0) on Monday morning in the semifinals of the ITA National Team Indoor Championships, the No. 1 Stanford women’s tennis team’s 25-match winning streak dating back to February 24, 2018 was finally broken. The Cardinal now has a season record of 5-1, and had taken down No. 18 LSU (4-0) and No. 6 Texas (4-3) on Friday and Sunday in the first round and quarterfinals before falling to Georgia in the semifinals on Monday.
The Stanford men’s and women’s tennis teams captured two season dual match wins each during ITA Kick-Off Weekend at Taube Tennis Stadium on Saturday and Sunday. Both teams will move on to the ITA National Team Indoor Championships in Chicago next month.
