PSYCH 148S: “The Psychology of Bias: Stereotyping, Prejudice, and Discrimination” is a three unit course where students gain an understanding of societal bias and ways to combat it. The class incorporates research and studies from social, cognitive, affective, developmental, cultural and neural perspectives to analyze the processes that reflect and perpetuate group biases.
Stanford psychology majors are collaborating with department faculty in research projects on topics including empathy’s role in the criminal justice system, cystic fibrosis and cross-cultural understanding of well-being.
CARTA lowers students’ Grade Point Average (GPA), according to a paper published by a group of Stanford professors. Researchers divided students into two random groups. One group was encouraged to use CARTA by an email from Stanford’s registrar and a prompt in the University’s course enrollment system. The control group received no encouragement.

When Katherine Gjertsen ’21 and her classmates dissected a sheep brain during section for PSYCH 50: Introduction to Cognitive Neuroscience, she said she was delighted.
“It was insane in the brain,” Gjertsen said.
Sheep brain dissection is one among many interesting activities planned for students in PSYCH 50, a course that aims to provide an in-depth exploration of cognitive function in the brain, including perception, hearing, memory, learning, consciousness, attention and decision making.
Stanford’s popular psychology class, PSYCH 1: “Introduction to Psychology,” has long included an experiment participation component, but recently students have expressed concerns and confusion about the requirement and its value.
