Stanford track and field is sending 32 student-athletes to the NCAA West Preliminaries this Memorial Day weekend in Austin, Texas. The 21 Cardinal women and 11 Cardinal men will compete for top-12 finishes in their respective events in order to advance to the NCAA Championships.
Stanford women’s track and field was victorious in the 123rd annual Big Meet against longstanding rival Cal, winning 85-74. The men’s team did not have the same luck on Saturday, losing 91-70 at the Cobb Track and Angell Field.
Fifty-six Stanford athletes competed at the Pac-12 Track and Field Championships at the University of Washington on May 14 and 15. As the No. 13 Stanford men looked to snap a three-year losing streak in the Big Meet, fate would have it such that the Stanford-Cal rivalry would come down to the final 4×400 relay. And instead of Stanford’s usual quartet running the event, sophomore decathlete Harrison Williams, who was named Pac-12 Field Athlete of the Week last week, was a last-minute addition to the event, running the leadoff leg.
This past week was packed with competition for the Stanford men’s and women’s track and field teams just three weeks after the end of the indoor season, beginning mid-week with the Nike Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays held in Austin from March 30 – April 1 and finishing this weekend with the Stanford Invitational on April 1-2.
