For the second time in three years, the Stanford women’s volleyball team has won the national championship. On December 15th, at the Target Center in Minneapolis, Minnesota, the No. 1 seeded Stanford Cardinal (34-1, 20-0 Pac-12) defeated the No. 6 Nebraska Cornhuskers (29-7) in five hard-fought sets to claim the program’s eighth total national title.
Stanford women’s volleyball has had an absolutely incredible season in 2018. They went undefeated in the Pac-12, swept their way through their regional bracket, and claimed the number one seed in the NCAA tournament. But there was a constant blemish on their otherwise perfect season—their one loss on the year, a five set defeat to Brigham Young University. The Cardinal ended the regular season 28-1, nearly undefeated.
In a spectacular weekend which saw more than 5500 people gather at Maples Pavilion for the NCAA Women’s Volleyball Regional Finals, the No. 1 Stanford Cardinal (32-1, 20-0 Pac-12) bested their bracket, defeating both No. 19 Washington State (23-10; 12-8 Pac-12) and No. 8 Penn State (26-8, 14-6 Big Ten) by 3-1 scores, gaining a place in the Final Four to be played December 13th and 15th in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
Stanford women’s volleyball (30-1, 20-0 Pac-12) continued their unstoppable march to Minneapolis and the NCAA Final Four this weekend, smashing their first and second round opponents without dropping a single set. The No. 1 seeded Cardinal rolled past the lowest seeded team in the tournament, the Alabama State Hornets (23-18), on Friday night, before taking down the Loyola Marymount Lions (21-10) on Saturday.
After cinching the Pac-12 Conference Championship on Friday for the 18th time, the No. 2 Stanford women’s volleyball team hopes to continue their dominance in the conference in the two away games this weekend. The Cardinal will first play on Friday at No. 18 Washington State, before continuing on to No. 20 Washington on Sunday.
The No. 2 Stanford women’s volleyball team (22-1, 14-0 Pac-12) remains second in the AVCA college volleyball poll again this week, still just behind No. 1 Brigham Young University, whom they lost to earlier in the season. However, the team is still in sole possession of first place in the Pac-12 this season, with an undefeated conference record. They will look to extend this conference lead at home this weekend with matches against No. 17 Oregon (16-8, 9-5 Pac-12) and Oregon State (11-15, 1-13 Pac-12).
The No. 2 ranked Stanford women’s volleyball team (22-1, 14-0 Pac-12) has won 20 straight games. The team played two matches at home this past weekend to reach that point, taking down Colorado (14-11, 6-8) on Friday and Utah (13-12, 5-9) on Sunday to notch wins number 19 and 20 in the streak.
Second-ranked Stanford Women’s Volleyball (20-1, 12-0) picked up two more wins over ranked teams this weekend, going on the road to sweep No. 15 USC and No. 20 UCLA in Los Angeles. The Cardinal have twelve such ranked victories, first in the nation by a wide margin. Junior outside hitter Kathryn Plummer led the team with 28 total kills and also chipped in 20 digs over the weekend to help Stanford secure its 18th straight 20 win season and move closer to a second straight Pac-12 Championship.
