The football gods must always take more than they give. After Stanford earned the right to keep the Axe for another year, it was only fair that nearly every former Cardinal in the NFL would lose. Despite the list of L’s, the following alumni were still able to make an impact for their team.
Following the postponement of the 121st Big Game last weekend, Stanford football became a Sunday affair as alumni fought on the gridiron across the country. Week 11 wrinkled the normal expectations for Stanford in the NFL; Carolina Panthers’ running back Christian McCaffrey and Philadelphia Eagles’ tight end Zach Ertz were held to disappointing performances. Meanwhile, rookie Houston Texans’ safety Justin Reid was the highlight of the week for any Cardinal fan.
After losing four of their last five games, Stanford football has thoroughly dashed all hopes and dreams for another dominant season. The only solace left for Cardinal fans now resides on Sundays. Unfortunately, Week 9 in the NFL was a rollercoaster for Stanford alumni as impressive offensive performances were dampened by injuries on the other side of the ball.
With David Decastro, Blake Martinez, and Doug Baldwin on bye and Richard Sherman out for the San Francisco 49ers, many big-name Cardinal players were out of action. Meanwhile, the few Stanford stars that did suit up proved to be key players in Week seven NFL action.
After graduating from Stanford, some students go on to medical school. Some intern at startups. Some go back home to live with their parents and vent over dinner about the futility of truly meaningful social impact in the modern world citing Sartre chapters assigned in PHIL 102 and strenuous and impassioned participation in Rise Against Hunger during freshman NSO.

Week in and week out in the National Football League, you can count on three main Stanford alumni to make headlines across the league with consistent, superstar performances. Every football fan in the world would recognize Indianapolis Colts quarterback Andrew Luck, Carolina Panthers running back Christian McCaffrey, and Philadelphia Eagles tight end Zach Ertz. But there are 28 total Stanford players in the NFL, including these three, each suiting up every Sunday as a full fledged member of a 53-man roster.
