Steven Artandi, M.D., Ph.D. was appointed director of the Stanford Cancer Institute — an initiative that aims to improve cancer treatment at Stanford — on Oct. 1. He was previously a professor of medicine and biochemistry at the School of Medicine and will succeed outgoing director Beverly Mitchell, M.D., who has led the Institute for the past 10 years.
Facebook Chief Security Officer Alex Stamos will leave his role at the company this month for a position as adjunct professor at Stanford’s Freeman-Spogli Institute for International Studies (FSI). According to a Facebook post by Stamos, he plans to research cybersecurity, misuse of technology and the spread of misinformation, particularly with regard to the upcoming midterm elections, at Stanford.
In a Monday afternoon presentation on his new book, “Taming the Sun: Innovations to Harness Solar Energy and Power the Planet,” Varun Sivaram ’11 stressed current constraints on solar power and three types of innovation — financial innovation, technological innovation and systemic innovation — that he believes are key to sustaining solar energy’s rise to dominance.
