Sliding three spots in the rankings this week to No. 11, Stanford women’s basketball (6-1, 0-0 Pac-12) dropped a close one, its first loss of the season, against the No. 24 Gonzaga Bulldogs (8-1, 0-0 WCC) by a score of 73-79 this past Sunday in Spokane, Washington.
A strong bullpen performance and a go-ahead RBI single from junior shortstop Nico Hoerner propelled No. 2 Stanford baseball (21-3) to a 4-3 win over Gonzaga (13-13) on a sunny Monday afternoon in Sunken Diamond.
Aided by 21 points from freshman guard Kiana Williams, 20 points from junior forward Alanna Smith and a double-double from senior Brittany McPhee, fourth-seeded Stanford women’s basketball (23-10) rolled past thirteenth-seeded Gonzaga (27-6) during the first round of the NCAA tournament on Saturday.
The Cardinal punched their ticket to the second round with an 82-68 win.
After a deep run in the Pac-12 tournament in Seattle earlier in March, Stanford women’s basketball (22-10) finished 15th on the AP Poll and was awarded a fourth seed for the first two rounds of the NCAA tournament.
