Although Stolakis is hard at work checking off requirements and shaping her final project (an exploration of Mormon feminism), Stolakis kindly agreed to sit down with The Daily’s Will Ferrer to converse about everything from her recent work to the absence of female directors in today’s industry.
Transforming orchestras, winning international competitions, breaking gender barriers: that is just a sample of what young conductors are doing these days. 2014 was a thrilling year that marked the rise of many brilliant talents, but more importantly it brought to the forefront the touchy issue of gender in a field historically dominated by men. This is changing, however, as increasing numbers of female conductors prove their leadership skills and musical gifts as the heads of top orchestras.
It is reprimandable that a country’s government could condone such explicitly degrading, dehumanizing, and objectifying work for women. Regardless of regulations, human trafficking of prostitutes continues to exist in the Netherlands. While not all prostitutes in the Netherlands have been trafficked, or forcibly brought into a prostitution ring, it does become a sort of financial, emotional, and physical trap for many.
We should recognize that the solution to gender disparity at the university level is not as simple as we would like it to be – instead, the solution requires deep thought, careful consideration, and a true understanding of the problem.
