In its 10th meeting, the 20th Undergraduate Senate reported on multiple Senator’s personal projects, including proposals to establish a First Generation and Low-Income (FLI) dormitory and community center as well as to create a successor to the Cardinal Conversations program.
At its Thursday meeting, the Faculty Senate heard presentations on the University’s budget for the upcoming academic year, as well as efforts to improve faculty diversity.
During its weekly meeting on Wednesday evening, the Graduate Student Council (GSC) debated a bill to broadly reform the ASSU constitution authored by GSC member Caleb Smith ’17 M.S. ’18. The Council also motioned to create a working group to handle mental health issues in response to the recent lawsuit against the University and addressed several procedural matters.

Many students who left their families for the Farm have been welcomed into new ones throughout October and November, thanks to a widespread student group tradition — “sib fams” meant to bring older and younger students together.
When low income students are absent from the humanities, it means that their voices and distinct perspectives are absent from campus culture. It means that while one class of students is busy seeking financial security, another is creating the university’s identity.
We need residences and at least one dining hall to remain open during all school breaks. To do otherwise is telling first-generation and/or low-income students that although Stanford’s brochures may claim to value diversity of all kinds, it’s just for show.
