After kicking off its season with a bang with big wins over California Baptist and Cal State, the Cardinal wrestling team (2-1) faced a stiff test against No. 8 Northwestern (1-0) in its home opener at Burnham Pavilion. Although the team hung around with the Wildcats in a back-and-forth meet, Northwestern cleaned up in the 141-, 149- and 157-pound decisions to claim a hard-fought 21-13 victory.
The Pac-12 announced on Thursday that redshirt freshman Jim Wilson has been named the Pac-12 Wrestling Freshman/Newcomer of the Year after an outstanding campaign in which he helped pace the Cardinal to the most dual wins in a season in school history.
After a season that saw the Cardinal wrestling team come the closest it ever has in program history to winning a conference title, Stanford was unable to improve upon its 38th-place finish at the 2013 NCAA Championships, tying for 40th in this year’s tournament in Oklahoma City.
