For just the second time this year, the No. 8 men’s volleyball team was defeated in Maples. No. 6 Pepperdine claimed the 3-0 decision, taking advantage of Stanford’s anemic gameplay.
No. 8 men’s volleyball recovered from their worst beatdown of the season to earn their first road win of the season after defeating UC San Diego on Saturday night.
Friday night saw the worst performance of the year from the No. 8 men’s volleyball team (12-7, 1-1 MPSF) as they were destroyed by top-ranked Long Beach State (16-0, 2-0 Big West) in three sets, 18-25, 13-25, 14-25.
Coming off of a closely contested double-header versus No. 10 Brigham Young (8-5, 4-3 MPSF), No. 8 Stanford men’s volleyball (12-6, 4-3 MPSF) now looks to the most formidable opponent of them all, nearly perfect No. 1 Long Beach State (15-0, 2-0 Big West). Although unlikely, even winning a single set against the reigning national champions on Friday will be admirable for the Cardinal.
After a draining 2-3 loss to No. 9 BYU on Thursday, No. 8 men’s volleyball (12-6, 4-3 MPSF) ended their three year losing streak against the Cougars (8-5, 4-3) with an emphatic 3-1 win. Stanford is now tied with BYU for third place in the MPSF conference standings.
No. 9 men’s volleyball (11-6, 3-3 MPSF) was unable to convert three match points against No. 9 BYU (8-4, 4-2 MPSF) in a soul-crushing five set loss. True to the rankings, the match was about as even as possible, with the sets falling 25-21, 17-25, 25-21, 23-25, 15-17.
Looking to win their first game on the road, No. 8 Stanford men’s volleyball (11-5, 3-2 MPSF) travels to Provo, Utah to take on No. 9 Brigham Young University (7-4, 3-2 MPSF) tonight. BYU is yet to lose a home game this season, but this statistic should not deter the Cardinal — who enter the game on a win streak.
