Stanford softball (24-31, 3-21 Pac-12) finished a tumultous season Saturday with a close 2-1 victory over No. 9 Arizona (40-14, 13-11) at Smith Family Stadium, vindicating Thursday (0-1) and Friday (0-4) losses and ending a five game losing streak. The comeback marked the Cardinal’s first win against Arizona since 2013, while the three-game series loss marked the ninth in as many years.

The Saturday nail-biter came down to senior Lauren Wegner, who delivered a dramatic and tie-breaking walk-off sacrifice fly in the eighth inning to win the last game of her collegiate career and break the Wildcats’ 11 game winning streak.

Recovering from a series sweep by Arizona State in Tempe the weekend prior, Stanford hosted Arizona with the goal of ending their season on a high note, since the Cardinal lacked qualifications for postseason play.

Following Thursday’s 0-1 defeat, this goal still seemed attainable, as junior pitcher Carolyn Lee (4-11) prevented the Wildcats from amassing any runs over the first 6 innings, striking out four of five hits in the complete game. Two outs into the sixth, however, Wildcat Hillary Edior’s double gave Ivy Davis, posted on first, time to bring home the sole run of the day. While the Cardinal had hits in the seventh and eighth, the offense largely failed to make it past first.

Friday’s resounding 0-4 loss seemed more difficult to overcome, as Arizona scored runs in the first, third and fourth innings to seize the series win. Sophomore pitcher Nikki Bauer (2-7) failed to live up to Lee’s Thursday performance, instead allowing four runs on nine hits, and four walks. Bauer closed out the game, however, with four straight strikeouts. Stanford, held to 3 hits, with 6 stranded basemen over the course of the game, failed to make offensive headway.

The team came back from these losses, however, to claim a 2-1 win in the final game of the weekend and season. Stanford started off the game on their own terms, scoring a 1-0 lead with sophomore Teaghan Cowles’ first inning home run, thanks to her walk and senior Arden Pettit’s single hit.

Lee, pitching the entire game, was able to hold off the Wildcats from scoring until the fifth inning, when Arizona scored a solo home run, hit to right centerfield. Tied up entering the eighth, senior Wegner hit a sacrifice fly to bring home the second run and win the game.

Although the Cardinal is ranked second to last in the Pac-12 conference, the team made great strides to improve the program this season, claiming the most wins and longest (6 game) winning streak since 2014, and three times as many steals (54) as in most past seasons. A handful of athletes are nearing program records as well, including sophomore Teaghan Cowles’ with 6 triples and 18 steals this season alone. In her first season as Cardinal Head Coach and eighth season coaching overall, Jessica Allister has surpassed 300 career wins.

This weekend marked the last series for seniors and repeat Pac-12 All-Academics Victoria Molina, Pettit and Wegner. All three athletes were honored in a ceremony preceding the Saturday game.

Stanford No. 9 women’s and No. 18 men’s track and field will host the 23rd annual Payton Jordan Invitational this Thursday at Angell Field, concluding the regular outdoor season in their third and most competitive home meet of the year. In one of the most highly anticipated domestic invitationals, athletes from dozens of schools across the country will compete alongside former Olympians and NCAA titleholders to prove their mettle ahead of championship play.

Following the invitational, the Cardinal will hold onto the home advantage when they host the Pac-12 Multi-Event Championships on Saturday and Sunday and the final Pac-12 Championships May 12-13.

Stanford has had a smooth spring, highlighted by a victory against Cal on April 7 in their one scored meet of the outdoor season and a number of school record-breaking races. The invitational will offer Stanford another opportunity to hit a few more personal bests and school records before taking on the Pac-12s, which Stanford men have failed to conquer since 2002 and Stanford women have failed to conquer since 2005.

The Stanford women, with a roster dotted with nationally-ranked athletes across diverse events, will seek to stay near the top of the pack.

The Cardinal’s 4 by 400m team, No. 8 in the NCAA and No. 1 in the conference, is one of just three in the nation to claim five athletes running their legs in under 54 seconds. The team is also ranked third in school history for their record time of 3:31.65. The team is led by senior Olivia Baker, hitting a 53.03, Gaby Gales, Missy Mongiovi and freshman standout Ashlan Best. At last week’s National Relay Championships, Baker notably ran the third-fastest anchor leg of the sprint medley relay in collegiate history, winning the event.

In discus, fifth year senior and 12th-best thrower in American history Valarie Allman will aim for gold, while the second ranked shot putter in the NCAA, senior Lena Giger, will try to top her personal-best of 18.09 meters. In distance events, graduate student Vanessa Fraser is predicted to shine in the women’s 3000m and the 1500m, in which she hit the third fastest time by a collegian this year, 4:10.63.

The Cardinal men are having similar 4-by-4 success, having hit 3:05.76 this season, less than half a second short of the Stanford record. The runners, Frank Kurts, Isaiah Brandt-Sims, Gabriel Navarro and Julian Body are also stars in the 4 by 100m, hitting 40.04 seconds, the fourth fastest in school history. In sprints, senior Brandt-Sims is expected to lead the cardinal in the 100m, with a personal best of 10.53.

In the 1500m, Stanford has three runners breaking 14 minutes, led by Grant Fisher with a consistent time sub-13:40,and Sean McGorty, who has a personal best of 13:40.57, ranked fourth in the country. Fisher is also the reigning NCAA outdoor 5000m champion, an event he is likely to headline at the invitational.

A number of non-Stanford men’s track stars will draw crowds Thursday. Rio Olympic champion Matthew Centrowitz will run the 1500m, with a record of 3:30.40 and only slightly slower performance this season. Canadian Cross Country star, collegian Justyn Knight, is currently seeking to best his own 13:17 in the 5000m, with a three-year streak of setting personal records at the Payton Jordan. More Olympians will hit the track in the steeplechase, the 10,000m and other distance events.

The Payton Jordan Invitational will commence with field events at 4 p.m. and track events at 6 p.m. this Thursday, May 3, at Angell Field. General admission tickets can be purchased at gostanford.evenue.net ($10/adult; $5/student, youth, seniors). Event coverage will stream on flotrack.org.

Admission to the Pac-12 Multi-Event Championships this weekend (May 5 and 6) is free and open to the public. Events will run from 12:00 to 5:45 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m. to 4:50 p.m. Sunday at Cobb Track and Angell Field. The complete schedule is available at Pac-12.com.

Despite being ranked second in the conference and fourth in the nation, Stanford men’s tennis (21-3, 7-1) lost 0-4 on Friday to No. 12 USC (17-8, 6-2) in the Pac-12 championship semifinals in Ojai, California following a difficult 4-2 win against Washington (13-13, 2-6) in the Thursday quarterfinals.

The championship loss marks the Cardinal’s sixth appearance in the conference semifinals but fourth tournament loss in as as many years, a bump in the road to the upcoming NCAA championships.

Facing Washington on Thursday, No. 37 juniors Sameer Kumar and Michael Genender, No. 24 senior Tom Fawcett and freshman Axel Geller, and graduate student Eric Fomba and sophomore David Wilcynski all claimed their doubles matches with three point leads.

Armed with the category point, the Cardinal entered the singles round and soon surrendered two points in the top two positions. In uncharacteristic defeats, No. 9 Fawcett and No. 74 Geller each lost their first two sets to lower ranked players.

Trailing 1-2, No. 92 Kumar delivered a tense and hard fought win in the third position, scoring 6-3, 4-6, 3-3. Fomba, Wilcynski and Genender all followed with easily swung two setters, earning the Cardinal three points overall and bringing the match score to a 4-2 victory.

In the Friday semifinals, Stanford was swept for the second time this year after securing just one doubles and one singles win, and no match points, even though the Cardinal had ably defeated USC twice in the regular season.

Although reliable Fomba and Wilcynski were ahead in the third doubles position, it wasn’t enough to offset quick losses in the top two spots. Nationally ranked pairs Fawcett and Geller, typical headliners, and Kumar and Genender both fell to powerful duos with top ten rankings.

In singles, No. 9 Fawcett claimed a vengeful 6-1, 2-6, 2-5 win in the first position against No. 11 Brandon Holt, who defeated him in doubles play. Although Fomba and Genender led the first games of their unfinished matches, they could not offset Gellar, Kumar and Wilcynski’s two-set losses, and the Cardinal was unable to claim a point.

Stanford next competes on May 12th and 13th in the first two rounds of the NCAA championships, with the location yet to be determined. Pending qualification, the Cardinal will face off in the final championships and final competition of the year from May 17th-28th in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.

No. 16 Stanford women’s tennis (18-3, 9-0 Pac-12) swept the quarter and semifinals to triumph 4-2 over No. 13 UCLA (20-5, 9-1) in the nail-biting finals of the Pac-12 championships on Saturday in Ojai, California, seizing the crown for the third consecutive year and securing the conference bid to the upcoming NCAA championships.

After winning the regular season conference title and heading into the postseason with two nationally ranked doubles pairs and an entire lineup of ranked singles players, the Cardinal raised their winning streak to 14 consecutive matches. Currently holding 18 NCAA titles, the most of any collegiate program, Stanford women’s tennis hopes to make a national impression in the coming weeks.

Stanford’s 4-0 sweep of No. 43 Washington (16-11, 5-5) in the Thursday quarterfinals set the tone for the rest of the tournament. The semifinals followed suit on Friday, as the women swept No. 48 Washington State (21-7, 5-5) and earned their 1000th win in program history.

On Saturday, the Cardinal was tested by UCLA in the doubles category when the No. 2 ranked pairing of sophomore Emily Arbuthnott and freshman Michaela Gordon were unable to match UCLA’s No. 6 team by a narrow margin, losing 7-6 in the first spot. Reliable star and No. 16 ranked Gordon also failed to secure a point in the first singles position, losing the first and third sets of a tense and challenging match against high performing No. 14 Erin Shibahara.

No. 68 ranked junior Melissa Lord’s impressive 6-1, 7-5 defeat of her No. 30-ranked opponent in the second position restored the team’s confidence. No. 94 junior Caroline Lampl (3-6, 6-1, 7-6) and No. 51 Arbuthnott (4-6, 6-1, 6-1) lost their first sets, but came back with epic resolve to win their second two.

The No. 95 ranked freshman Janice Shin led an unfinished match, but it was No. 109 sophomore stand out Emma Higuchi who nailed a powerful two setter (6-4, 7-6) to finish off the victory against UCLA and deliver the tournament crown. Stanford will discover their NCAA opponents and bracket position in the NCAA Tournament selection show on Tuesday. The championships will run May 11th through 13th, with the final 16 facing off on the 17th in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. The location and schedule is set to be released next week, though Stanford looks to be a strong candidate to host a few rounds.

Stanford’s No. 4 men’s and No. 16 women’s tennis teams are set to compete at the Pac-12 championships in Ojai, California this Thursday through Saturday, skipping the Wednesday elimination round. With byes to the quarterfinals, both teams are hoping to bring home conference titles and land the conference’s automatic NCAA bids.

The Pac-12’s No. 1 seeded women (15-3, 9-0 Pac-12), having secured the conference’s regular season title, are aiming for a third consecutive Pac-12 championship crown.

The Cardinal women are on an 11-meet winning streak that propelled the team from 46th to 16th in the nation over the past six weeks. They are also hoping to tally enough Pac-12 wins to earn a top-15 ranking and gain NCAA championship hosting eligibility.

Stanford enters the championships with a line up of nationally ranked young singles stars; No. 16 freshman Michaela Gordon, No. 51 sophomore Emily Arbuthnott and No. 109 sophomore Emma Higuchi, each with 20+ wins this season. In doubles, the Cardinal is just as set to dominate, with Arbuthnott and Gordon (15-3 overall) ranked second in the nation, and Caroline Lampl and junior Kimberly Lee (12-3 overall) ranked 78th.

The Pac-12’s No. 2 seeded men (20-2, 7-1), coming off the team’s best regular season since 2001, will rely on their seniors and nationally ranked singles stars, including No. 8 senior Tom Fawcett, No. 70 freshman Axel Geller and No. 90 junior Sameer Kumar. Fawcett and Geller also comprise the Cardinal’s No. 24 ranked doubles pair, supported in the category by No. 50 Kumar and junior Michael Genender.

On Thursday at 2 p.m., Stanford women will face No. 8 seed Washington, whom the Cardinal defeated 4-2 two weeks ago, or No. 9 seed Colorado. Pending a win, the Cardinal will move on to the semifinals on Friday at 1 p.m. and the finals on Saturday at 12 noon.

On Thursday at 3 p.m., the Cardinal men take on No. 7 seed Washington. Assuming victory, they will face No. 3 seed USC or No. 6 seed AZ State on Friday at 4 p.m. If they advance to the 3 p.m. Saturday finals, it is quite likely that they will compete against the No. 1 Pac-12 seed and the No. 1 ranked team in the nation, UCLA, who swept Stanford 0-4 on March 30th.

All Pac-12 men’s matches will be held at Libbey Park at staggered times. Meanwhile, the women will compete at three different locations with most games sharing start times, making it harder for fans of the women’s team to watch all the matches.

All of championship week will stream on Pac-12 networks.

No. 4 Stanford men’s tennis (20-2, 7-1 Pac-12) secured its first undefeated home season in 12 years with victories against No. 36 Oregon (16-8, 4-4) and Washington (13-12, 2-6) at Taube Family Tennis Stadium on Friday and Saturday. The stellar weekend also closed out the Cardinal’s best overall season performance since 2001.

Stanford earned a 4-1 triumph over Oregon in their second win against the Ducks this season, and a 4-0 victory over Washington, marking the Cardinal’s tenth meet sweep this year.

In the Friday meet, the Cardinal easily collected all three doubles matches led by juniors Sameer Kumar and Michael Genender in the No. 1 spot. Although Kumar’s singles loss cost Stanford a point, senior Tom Fawcett and freshman Axel Geller each won two-setters in the top two positions.

Senior David Wilczynski and sophomore William Genesen followed up with unsurprising two-setter wins. Graduate student Eric Fomba’s 7-6 (1), 6-2 clincher earned the team its fourth meet point once again, further cementing his position as a season breakout star and keystone singles player.

On Saturday, emotions were high as co-captains Fawcett and Wilczynski played their last regular season matches for the Cardinal. Kumar and Genender once again owned the top doubles position with a 7-5 victory, while doubles dream team Fawcett and Geller cleanly swept a 6-0 win in the second spot.

Wilczynski’s 6-3, 6-2 match marked his fifth consecutive decision win and a fitting end to his final, successful regular season. After Fawcett, Gellar and Kumar’s matches were abandoned, Genender and Fomba’s two set victories were once again the essential final components of the meet decision.

The Cardinal will take to the courts this Wednesday through Friday to compete in the Pac-12 championships in the No. 2 position, having only lost to one conference member, UCLA, during the regular season. The bracket and schedules will be released Monday, while the competition in Ojai, California will be streamed on Pac-12 networks.

No. 20 Stanford women’s tennis (15-3, 9-0 Pac-12) closed out their regular season with a 4-0 home sweep against No. 42 rival California (11-8, 6-4) on Friday, earning them the Pac-12 conference regular season title and positioning the Cardinal as the No. 1 seed for next week’s Pac-12 championships.

After securing their ninth home win, ninth intraconference win and 11th consecutive victory, the Cardinal is well-poised to take home both the regular and championship Pac-12 titles for the first time in the program’s history, although they claimed the post-season title last year.

Claiming two of the three doubles pairings, the Cardinal took the first point of the day. Although the nationally ranked No. 3 team of sophomore Emily Arbuthnott and freshman Michaela Gordon’s unleashed a powerful 6-0 win in the first position, it was junior Melissa Lord and freshman Janice Shin’s third position 7-5 victory that clinched the category win.

Gordon, the No. 22 ranked singles player in the country, continued to anchor her team in singles, seizing a 6-2, 6-4 triumph in the first position and her 20th match decision of the season.

Although Lord, Shin, and sophomore Caroline Lampl each had one game win, their matches were abandoned; it was Arbuthnott’s 22nd season win, along with increasingly consistent sophomore Emma Higuchi’s 6-2, 6-1 victory – and 21st season win – that earned Stanford the sweep.

Holding the top spot in the conference, the Cardinal will skip to the quarterfinals to compete in the Pac-12 championships on Thursday and Friday in Ojai, California. The match details are set for release Monday, while the competition will be streamed on Pac-12 networks.

Stanford’s No. 4 ranked men’s and No. 20 ranked women’s tennis teams will close out the regular season this weekend with three total home meets and high expectations. On Friday, the women’s team will host No. 42 California at 11 a.m., and the men’s team will face No. 36 Oregon at 2 p.m., both meets held at Taube Family Tennis Stadium. After the men host Washington at 3 p.m. on Saturday, both teams will be busy preparing for the Pac-12 championships the following week.

The men’s team (18-2, 5-1 Pac-12) is facing Oregon (15-7, 3-3) for the second time this season. Having defeated the Ducks 4-0 in January, the Cardinal are expected to increase their 32-3 all-time record against the team with a home sweep.

If Stanford can secure a second home win Saturday against Washington (13-0, 2-4) — against whom it has a 41-3 record — the Cardinal will have a shot at the Pac-12 regular season title. This is contingent on a UCLA loss to Utah on Friday, as the Bruins currently sit undefeated in the Pac-12. With two home wins, the Cardinal could increase their currently undefeated home record to 11-0.

The women’s team (14-3, 8-0), also playing on Friday, seeks to increase its 10-match winning streak and automatically secure the Pac-12 regular season title with a win against school rival California (11-7, 6-3).

After a sweep of the Pacific Northwest last weekend and brilliant performances by singles star freshman Janice Shin, sophomore standout Emma Higuchi and two nationally ranked doubles pairs, victories against Cal and at the Pac-12 championships are in the forecast.

On a reflective note, the men’s team intends to use their final season meets to celebrate the accomplishments of their graduating seniors. The team wishes to thank Tom Fawcett and David Wilczynski, all-time school record holders in doubles play and combined holders of 150+ singles victories over four years.

On April 20th, come out to Taube Family Tennis Stadium at 11 a.m. PT to root for the women’s team against Cal and 2 p.m. PT to root for another Oregon defeat by the men’s team. Both meets will be available for streaming on the Pac-12 networks.

On April 21st, cheer on senior men’s stars in their last season meet against Washington at Taube beginning at 3 p.m. PT.

After concluding the regular season this week, the men’s and women’s teams will head to the Pac-12 championships in Ojai, California to compete from the 25th-28th.

No. 22 Stanford women’s tennis (14-3, 8-0 Pac-12) swept their Pacific Northwest tour this weekend, clinching their ninth and 10th consecutive meet wins against No. 37 Washington State (20-5, 5-4) on Friday and the University of Washington (14-10, 4-5) on Saturday. The Cardinal defeated both teams by a 4-2 margin, securing Stanford’s position as the leader of the Pac-12 conference and cementing them as a force to be reckoned with in national competition.

On Friday, Stanford’s powerful pairings quickly earned the first point of the meet with a sweep of the doubles category. While juniors Caroline Lampl and Melissa Lord’s straight set singles victories each earned the Cardinal another point, freshman Michaela Gordon and sophomore Emily Arbuthnott fell in the first and fourth spots of the lineup.

Although poor weather forced the competition inside, freshman Janice Shin was unfazed, executing a powerful 6-2, 6-0 win in the number five position and delivering her team the final point necessary for a meet victory.

On Saturday, Stanford once again secured the doubles category point, and saw another two set victory by Shin in singles. With Gordon stuck in a three set tie, Arbuthnott and Lord’s fortunes reversed. While Lord fell in a three-setter at the number two spot, Arbuthnott redeemed her Friday performance with a 6-2, 6-4 win in the fourth position.

Sophomore Emma Higuchi delivered a three-set win to clinch the team victory in the sixth spot, marking her eighth win in a row. Higuchi is now 4-0 in career during three set matches.

Following their weekend on the road, the Cardinal returns home to host unranked California (8-6, 4-2) on April 20, and will then compete in the Pac-12 championships from April 25-28 in Ojai, California.

The Cardinal will face the Golden Bears in their last regular season meet at Taube Family Tennis Stadium on Friday, beginning at 11 a.m. The meet will be televised on Pac-12 networks.

No. 4 Stanford men’s tennis (18-2, 5-1 Pac-12) swept No. 31 California (10-7, 2-3) 4-0 Friday at Taube Family Tennis Stadium, completing the Cardinal’s first regular season sweep of the Bears since 2012. Senior Tom Fawcett and freshman Axel Geller’s doubles win and singles victories helped Stanford maintain its undefeated 9-0 home record and increase its all-time record against the Bears to 94-23.

The No. 23 ranked pair of Fawcett and Geller opened the meet with a 6-2 doubles victory, setting the pace for the rest of the afternoon. Followed by doubles victories from the No. 88 ranked pair of juniors Michael Genender and Sameer Kumar, as well as graduate student Eric Fomba and senior David Wilczynski, the team swept the doubles bracket to earn the Cardinal’s first point.

In the singles category, Fawcett and Geller proved themselves just as indispensable. No. 8 Fawcett cleanly defeated No. 56 Billy griffith 6-3, 6-4, the same Golden Bear that had bested him in February, exemplifying the Cardinal’s improvement and momentum over the course of this season. Geller won 10 of his 11 games overall on the day, seizing the second and third set to secure another point for the Cardinal.

Fomba (10-2), also secured the Cardinal a point in the singles category, dominating his match in two crushing sets 6-1, 6-3.

Ranked fourth in the nation and second in the Pac-12 conference, having lost only to No. 4 UCLA and No. 1 Wake Forest since January, the Cardinal is well-poised to sweep its final two meets in the regular season and enter the postseason with national expectations.

Stanford will host unranked Pac-12 competitors No. 41 Oregon and Washington on April 20th and 21st respectively before heading to the conference championships on April 25-28 in Ojai, California.

To watch Stanford face Oregon on the 20th, come out to Taube Family Tennis Stadium at 2 p.m. On the 21st, the Washington match will begin at Taube at 3 p.m.

This Friday on the farm, No. 4 Stanford Men’s Tennis (17-2, 4-1 Pac-12) will face rival No. 31 California (10-6, 2-2) for the second time this season. Fourth in the nation and second in the conference, Stanford is expected to shine against the Bears as the boys prepare for the Pac-12 championships at the end of the month.

The “Big Slam” competition comes on the heels of a successful home match last Saturday, when the Cardinal swept No. 32 Utah (19-4, 2-2) with a score of 4-0.

Stanford last faced Cal on Feb. 24, when the Cardinal bested the Golden Bears 4-1 at Berkeley. The win was made possible by the doubles victories by the pairings of senior Tom Fawcett and sophomore Axel Geller (6-3) and freshman Timothy Sah and senior David Wilczynski (6-2), in addition to Geller’s second singles performance (7-6 (9), 2-6, 6-3).

On Friday, nationally ranked players No. 8 Fawcett (18-4) and No. 57 Geller (14-3) are expected to lead the team in singles victories. Strong performances are also expected from consistent doubles stars No. 87 junior Sameer Kumar (10-3) and Wilczynski, who are currently on a three-match winning streak. Anchored by these players, the team is positioned to increase their 93-23 all-time win record over the Bears, and potentially sweep the team for the first time in a regular season since 2012.

Having only lost to No. 4 UCLA and No. 1 Wake Forest since January, the Cardinal is unlikely to tally any more losses in the regular season. Following Friday, Stanford will host unranked Oregon and Washington on April 20 and 21 respectively, before heading to the Pac-12 conference championships from April 25-28 in Ojai, California.

To root for the Cardinal or against the Bears, come out to Taube Family Tennis Stadium on Friday at 3 p.m. or watch the live stream at: StreamingTennis.com.

No. 22 Stanford women’s tennis (12-3, 6-0 Pac-12) will travel north this weekend to face Pac-12 rivals No. 37 Washington State (20-3, 5-2) on Friday and Washington (13-9, 3-4) on Saturday, in the team’s third and second to last meets of the regular season.

Having defeated No. 26 Oregon (12-8, 3-5) in a home meet last Sunday in their eighth straight win of the season, the girls are poised to best the Washington schools by a comfortable margin.

Against Oregon, the Cardinal sophomores stood out, as Emily Arbuthnott (20-6 overall) secured the fifth clincher of her season and Emma Higuchi (19-6) triumphed with seven wins in a row. Star freshman, No. 15 ranked Michaela Gordon (19-6) suffered a close upset at the hands of No. 81 Alyssa Tobita, potentially predictive of postseason competition to come. Playing doubles, junior Melissa Lord and freshman Janice Shin snagged a valuable 6-3 win and provided Lord’s third consecutive victory after recovering from an injury.

Although the Cardinal is on a winning streak, and despite having only lost to three teams, all ranked in the top ten of the country, the team’s success will depend upon the strength of its headliners as the girls prepare to secure their third consecutive Pac-12 title two weeks from now.

In particular, performances by No. 54 juniors Caroline Lampl and Kimberly Yee (10-2 overall, 9-1 duals) as well as Arbuthnott and Gordon (14-3, 6-2) will be crucial to securing victories this weekend in the doubles category.

Following the weekend in the Pacific Northwest, the Cardinal will hit the courts on April 20 to host unranked California (8-6, 4-2) just before the Pac-12 championships from April 25-28 in Ojai, California.

Stanford will face Washington State Friday at 1:30 p.m. in Pullman, Washington. Stanford then travels to Seattle to face the Huskies at 12 p.m.

In its first postseason event, No. 4 Stanford men’s gymnastics continued its strong year with a second place finish at the MPSF Championships on Saturday in Colorado Springs. Coming out ahead of No. 11 Air Force (392.550) and No.12 California (393.650) with a score of 404.150, the Cardinal finished just behind No. 1 Oklahoma (414.050) who claimed its seventh consecutive MPSF crown.

The championship served as a warm up for the upcoming NCAA championships. The team had just returned from a ten-day trip to Italy for its first international competition since 2013, in which the Cardinal bested Italy 319.400 to 307.500.

Although the team failed to secure what would have been its fifth overall win at the MPSF championships, stellar performances by senior Robert Neff, junior Grant Breckinridge, sophomore David Jessen and freshman Blake Sun all demonstrated the team’s national top-ten status across all six events.

Neff, ranked second in the nation on high bar, earned a score of 14.250 to tie Jessen for second in the event. On parallel bars, Sun’s 14.300 and Breckenridge’s 14.200 landed the pair second and third place respectively.

Breckenridge also scored a career best on still rings (14.150) to secure a clean second place. On pommel, Sun (13.500) in second and Jessen (13.100) in fourth continued to put the Cardinal on the scoreboard. The team also delivered an impressive overall 70.600 on vault, and a 65.300 on floor.

This was the Cardinal’s second encounter with Oklahoma this season, as Stanford lost to the Sooners (and bested Nebraska) at an away meet on Feb. 3. This competitive exposure to the No. 1 team in the nation and three-time NCAA champion, as well as Stanford’s loss to No. 3 Ohio State on March 10th, may aid the Cardinal when they face off against the top teams in the nation later this month.

The Cardinal will next compete at the NCAA Championships in Chicago, Illinois. Qualifiers will be held on April 20 with the finals to commence on April 21. The schedule and pairings will be released by Tuesday.

Following its successful opening meet last week, Stanford women’s gymnastics took fourth place at the Elevate the Stage competition in Reno on Sunday. Facing No. 2 Utah, No. 4 UCLA and Washington, senior Elizabeth Price lived up to expectations, placing second in the all-around and in the top five in every event.

Price’s 39.650 all-around score was second only to Utah’s Makayla Skinner’s 39.700. The seasoned Cardinal’s victory on beam (9.850) and first-place tie on vault (9.950) were complemented by strong performances in a second-place tie on floor (9.950) and a fourth-place tie on bars (9.900).

Stanford had a cumulative team score of 195.350, just short of Washington’s 195.75, Utah’s 196.975 and UCLA’s 197.200.

“It’s really good to get out there at the beginning of the season and face those tough opponents from the get-go,” Price acknowledged prior to the meet. “It gives us bigger goals and things to strive for.”

“The Pac-12 conference truly is a conference of champions, and we have such strong teams that it’s a perfect way to prepare for post-season,” head coach Samantha Yim agreed, with regard to Utah, UCLA and Washington.

Yim noted that such intense competition would be especially helpful in preparing the freshmen, who comprise five out of 13 of her self-proclaimed “young team,” for the national arena.

Freshman Kyla Bryant, in particular, made the most of the high-level opportunity and displayed growth from the first meet. The Georgia native, who placed on two events at the NorCal classic, also placed in two events this time around and improved her scores in three events.

Bryant tied with Price for fourth on bars (9.900) and earned fifth in the all-around with a score of 39.300, up from a 38.725 in the opening meet.

Freshman Lauren Navarro also improved from the first meet, earning a 9.825 to tie for second on beam after previously scoring a 9.800 this season.

But the more experienced Cardinal athletes didn’t leave all the improvement to their newest members. Sophomore Kaylee Cole increased her scores on vault and beam from just last week, along with a solid ninth place on floor (9.825), one of the most competitive events.

The increasingly strong Stanford gymnasts will compete again this Saturday when they host Arizona State at 2 p.m. PT in Burnham Pavilion.

No. 2 Stanford men’s gymnastics (2-0) began its 2018 season on Saturday with a sweep of the Cal Benefit Cup as senior Robert Neff won the all-around, and the Cardinal claimed three individual and four team events. With 402.150 points, Stanford gymnasts across all class years performed consistently to top No. 10 Cal’s 398.850 and SC United’s 375.650.

Last weekend’s success comes in the notable absence of now-graduated Cardinal and national standout Akash Modi. Modi was last year’s NCAA all-around champion, a four-time MPSF Gymnast of the Year and former Olympic alternate.

In his wake, last year’s NCAA high bar champion Neff is expected to anchor the team in the all-around and his strongest events, high bar and floor, throughout his last season.

In the opening meet, Neff lived up to his expectations, not only seizing the all-around with an 82.850 but also leading his team on the floor and securing event titles on the high bar with a 14.200 as well as on the pommel horse.

Fellow freshman Thomas Lee exceeded expectations on rings, claiming the event title with a stellar 13.900, scoring ahead of freshman Andrew Bitner, who was predicted to lead the Cardinal in the event this season.

Sophomores Joey Ringer and David Jessen are expected to perform highest on pommel horse, although their respectable 12.000-range scores in the opening meet trailed Neff and Bitner’s 13.000-range executions.

Already displaying overall strength on vault, freshman Bryan Perla was a surprising standout in the opener, breaking a 14.000, although junior Barrett Weiss’ gravity-defying precision is expected to anchor the event in the year ahead.

On the parallel bars, sophomore Grant Breckenridge lived up to his seasonal expectations Saturday, leading the Cardinal in the event with world-class difficulty and angular discipline.

A former Czech Olympian, Jessen seems likely to dominate the high bar alongside Neff later in the season, although he struggled to keep up with his teammates’ performances in the opening meet.

Next weekend, the Cardinal heads to the midwest to face No. 8 Iowa and Illinois-Chicago on Jan. 21. While neither team poses a direct challenge to Stanford’s momentum, the travel will give freshmen the opportunity to experience the challenge of an away meet, a different time zone and very different temperatures.

The men’s team will return home to host the Stanford Open at the end of January, in which Cal and others will compete.

The first week of February will deliver an important and difficult opportunity, when the Cardinal travels to face No. 1 Oklahoma, the best gymnastics team in the country for three years running. If Stanford is able to keep up with the all-around champions and stay abreast of No. 3 Ohio State and No. 4 Illinois throughout the season, it will be in the running for nationals.

Later in February are the Pac-12 championships, where the Cardinal is favored to win, coming before a series of intercollegiate cups, a meet against Ohio State, MPSF championships and the NCAAs.

In advance of the busy and star-studded next few months, the Cardinal’s opening meet leaves them poised for great things.

Neff and his team’s all-around strength, especially that of underclassmen like freshmen Lee, Bitner and Perla and sophomores Jessen and Breckinridge, may well put the Cardinal on track for a sixth NCAA championship.

No. 2 Stanford men’s gymnastics (2-0) kicked off its season with flying colors at the Cal Benefit Cup on Saturday, as the Cardinal (402.150) swept No. 10 Cal (398.850) and SC United (375.650), and senior Robert Neff earned three titles including the all-around.

Neff seized the all-around with an 82.850, the pommel horse with a 13.900 and the high bar with a stunning 14.200. Neff was also accomplished on floor, earning a 13.900 — Stanford’s highest score in the event.

In his collegiate debut, freshman Thomas Lee secured a 13.900 on rings to claim the meet event title. Lee outswung the competition and stood out even among his older teammates. The next-highest scoring Cardinal gymnasts, Neff and junior Grant Breckenridge, were each 0.350 points behind Lee.

Even more significant than Neff and Lee’s personal successes were the team’s overall accomplishments that earned Stanford the meet title. The Cardinal claimed the highest cumulative team scores in four of the six events: floor, pommel horse, rings and parallel bars.

On five of the six events, every Stanford gymnast competing scored a 12.000 or higher; on two of those five (floor and vault), every Stanford gymnast competing secured at least a 13.000.

This consistency is particularly impressive considering that this year’s team is comprised of a group of both underclassmen and upperclassmen. Regardless of class year or collegiate experience, freshmen and juniors alike seemed to contribute to the team’s victory across the events.

On vault, freshman Bryan Perla made his impressive debut with a 14.050, the second-highest score at the meet, behind only Cal’s star Aaron Mah. Following Perla, junior Gareth Weiss clinched a powerful 13.950, sophomore Connor Lewis earned a strong 13.900 and freshman Andrew Bitner delivered a 13.800 point performance.

On parallel bars, Breckenridge led the Cardinal with a 13.850, while Neff and Bitner — a senior and a freshman, respectively — followed up closely with 13.800 each.

Neff and his team of rising stars will compete again on Sunday, Jan. 21 at 12 p.m. PT, when Stanford travels to Chicago to take on UIC and No. 8 Iowa.

Senior Elizabeth Price nailed a “perfect 10” on the uneven bars at Maples Pavilion on Monday night, as No. 18 Stanford women’s gymnastics claimed second place in their season opener against Cal, UC Davis, San Jose State and Sacramento State.

Price executed six difficult moves with precision and stuck the landing to earn the second “perfect 10” in her collegiate career. She is only the third to card one in the history of the Stanford women’s program.

While the Cardinal’s overall team score of 194.925 points landed them behind Cal’s 195.475, this year’s NorCal classic had more significance than just the score.

The meet marked the last season opener for Price, a former Olympic alternate, All-American and NCAA champion. The gymnast earned a 9.825 on beam, 9.85 on vault, a nearly perfect 9.975 on floor and that unbeatable score on bars. Her 39.650 all-around point total was the highest among all competitors at the meet.

Price had modest expectations coming into the meet, and was not anticipating such a career highlight.

“Getting a 10 on bars was a huge thing,” Price acknowledged. “Bars is definitely one of my stronger events, and I’ve done quite a few good routines over the years [but] never really grabbing that 10.0. So to already have that at the beginning of the year is going to provide a lot of momentum for me and my teammates, just knowing what we’re capable of as a team and individually.”

In advance of the meet, Stanford’s new head coach Samantha Yim had nothing but praise for the headlining star both in and out of the gym.

“She’s otherworldly, and just the quintessential team player,” Yim said, “She’s really embraced her role on the team and is doing everything she can to prepare her underclassmen and her team to be successful.”

Price is supported by a bevy of freshman as six of the 13 student-athletes on the roster are enjoying their first year on the Farm.

Four of those six freshmen made their collegiate debuts Monday. The 4-foot-11 powerhouse Kyla Bryant ended with a 9.8 on beam and a whopping 9.925 on floor. Lauren Navarro scored high with a 9.7, 9.8 and 9.85 on vault, beam and bars respectively. Taylor Lawson competed first in the lineup on vault and bars, securing an impressive 9.85 on the latter, while Rachael Flam ended with good scores as well, executing challenging routines in all four events

The Cardinal will participate in the Elevate the Stage competition in Reno, Nevada on Sunday. The meet will feature Utah, UCLA, Washington and Stanford. The event will be live streamed on flogymnastics.com.

Senior Elizabeth Price headlines the 2018 women’s gymnastics team, as her “perfect 10” on the uneven bars confirms her status as one of the premier gymnasts in college. However, the team isn’t without change as Samantha Yim was named head coach after long-time head coach Kristen Smyth resigned in August.

An alumna of Stanford and a former Cardinal gymnast, Yim expressed her excitement to be back at her alma mater in time to coach Price, who she worked with in 2015. Yim admired Price’s growth as a leader on a team that is nearly half freshmen.

Both Yim and Price believe these new team members are the key to a better season trajectory than last year, when the Cardinal did not qualify as a team for NCAA championships.

“They bring a lot of energy, fresh blood,” Yim enthused, “They’re excited to get out there and hit the ground running and that gives our entire team a real boost.”

“We have a new coach and six new faces that are definitely going to be adding a lot,” Price agreed, but added that the experience of the upperclassmen will be just as imperative to the team’s success and culture in the gym.

With all this potential meriting high expectations, Yim believes the team has the recipe to fulfill them: risk-taking and incremental growth.

“Something that we’re planning to do that’s a little bit different than [in] years past is we’re going to throw a lot of difficulty early in the season and we’re going to go big, because we think that’s what it’s going to take at the end of the year to be successful against some of these top teams, and we’re willing to take the risk.”

But in the long term, Yim explains, “We definitely have that slight edge philosophy of every single day we’re gonna get a little bit and a little bit better.”

Price has adopted the same attitude with regard to her personal goals.

“My main goal is just to take it meet by meet. If I’m out there doing the best routines I can in the moment then I’ ll be happy with my performance,” she said.

She added, “[I’m hoping] to make it the best year I can for my freshmen as well, because they’re the future of the program. I want them to be able to say they had just as an amazing time and experience as I did.”

Although she is continuing to exceed her goals, anchor her team, and make school records, Price is not reconsidering her previous decision to exit the gymnastics world after she graduates. Although she finds it hard to imagine her life without gymnastics, she is ready to move on.

“I’ve been doing gymnastics since I was three years old and I’ve done amazing things with the sport,” she said. “That being said I want to let other people take over and do what they want with the sport, and I’ll go a different way.”

Fortunately for fans, Price and her team have a long season left ahead of them.

Stanford will next compete this Sunday in Reno at “Elevate the Stage” against Pac-12 competitors Utah, Washington and UCLA, a team consistently ranked second or third nationally. While Yim and Price acknowledge the level of competition, neither are phased by the challenge.

“I think that we put a lot of work in,” Price explained, “and if we can bring out the consistency that we have at the gym and really fine tune those details we’ll be just as good of an opponent as they are.”

“It’s a perfect way to prepare for post-season,” Yim added, “Being such a young team we feel it’s really important to face off against the top teams in the nation.”

“Elevate” will take place on podium, a different competition surface than most meets, which she feels will also help give the freshmen early exposure to diverse circumstances and difficulties.

Stanford will round out the month by hosting Arizona on Jan. 20 and heading to Corvallis to face Oregon on Jan. 27. In February, the Cardinal will travel to UC Davis, Arizona and Washington, and host Cal on Jan. 17.

March will start off with another “Elevate” meet, this time against Nebraska, Illinois and Georgia, before Stanford hosts UCLA on the 11th. The Cardinal will compete in the Pac-12 championships in Arizona on Jan. 24.
To witness Price in action, to cheer on the newest additions, or perhaps to behold another “perfect 10,” come to the next home meet at Maples Pavilion on Jan. 20 at 2 p.m. against Arizona.

Two-time Olympian, five-time gold medalist, 14-time world champion and 13-time world record maker Katie Ledecky can claim another accolade, as the Associated Press has just named the Stanford sophomore Female Athlete of the Year 2017.

Ledecky is the first female swimmer, and the first college athlete, to receive the award in over 20 years.

Although usually granted to Americans, female athletes of all nationalities, age brackets and sports are eligible for the prestigious title. The champion natator earned enough votes (351) from sports journalists nationwide to nab the title just ahead of the tennis star Serena Williams (343) and track Olympian Allyson Felix (248). The male title-holder is professional baseball player and five-time MLB all-star José Altuve.

Such an achievement follows Ledecky’s record-breaking freshman year on the farm, within
the NCAA, and at the World Aquatics Championships.

After setting five Stanford team records, she aided the Cardinal in securing its first team title since 1998, beating runner-up Cal by the largest championship margin in over a decade.

Within the NCAA, the Maryland native set five individual American records, seven individual NCAA records and became the second freshman ever to receive the Honda Cup, awarded to the top female collegiate athlete in the nation.

At World Championships this past summer, Ledecky’s six medals earned her the title of most decorated female swimmer in championship history.

On top of these accomplishments, Ledecky was the U.S. Olympic Committee’s Female Olympic Athlete of the Year, Women’s Sports Foundation’s Sportswoman of the Year, and the youngest inductee into the D.C. Sports Hall of Fame.

Although the AP award may appear inconsequential amidst a sea of medals and honors, Ledecky’s nomination signifies the unique pace of her career and her status as a collegiate athlete competitive in the global arena.

The last female swimmer to receive the title was Amy Van Dyken, trailblazing Olympian and gold medalist, at the age of 23. At 20 years old, Ledecky is out-stroking the history books and all the competition in the pool.

Thanks to victories by sophomore Grant Shoults and junior Abrahm DeVine, No. 7 Stanford men’s swimming (1-0, 1-0 Pac-12) made a substantial splash at the University of Texas’ Invitational in Austin this past Wednesday through Saturday. Shoults took home first in both the 500- and 1,650-yard free, followed closely by his teammates who helped the Cardinal claim four of the top seven spots in each event.

Shoults (4:11.34) was flanked in the 500 free by senior Liam Egan (4:14.03) who nabbed second place, freshman Johannes Calloni (4:16.60) in fifth and sophomore True Sweetser (4:16.82) in sixth. In the 1,650, the Cardinal was led by Shoults (14:39.59) with an NCAA ‘A’ qualifying time in first immediately followed by Sweetster (14:41.48), while Calloni (14:52.59) and Egan (14:58.33) claimed fifth and seventh respectively.

Junior Abrahm DeVine won the 200-yard individual medley with a career-best of 1:41.99, the third best time in Stanford history, while freshman Alex Liang (1:45.21) came in fifth. Devine (3:44.75) also claimed third place in the 400 IM, as Liang (3:45.32) came in fourth and senior Curtis Ogren (3:45.56) in fifth.

Even though the Cardinal competed against 11 other strong men’s teams, most notably No. 7 USC, No. 9 Texas and No. 11 Arizona State, Stanford placed consistently over the course of the four days.

In the freestyle sprints, senior Sam Perry nabbed fourth place in the 50 free with a time of 19.68, and placed seventh with a seasonal personal record of 42.54 in the 100 free.

Freshman Brennan Pastorek represented the Cardinal in fifth place in the 200 breaststroke, swimming a team seasonal record of 1:55.69, a NCAA ‘B’ qualifying time.

In the group events, Stanford nabbed third-place finish in both the 200- and 400-yard medley relays with times of 1:25.50 and 3:07.65 respectively.

As further proof of their prowess in the distance free, the Cardinal attained a (6:19.93) fourth place finish in the 800 free relay, a 1:18.07 third place finish in the 200 free relay, and concluded the meet with a third place victory in the 400 free relay thanks to DeVine, Perry, junior Cole Cogswell and senior Andrew Liang’s NCAA ‘A’ qualifying time of 2:51.00.

Designed to imitate the competitive and structural nature of a championship meet, the invitational was a fitting end to the Cardinal’s fall season. Stanford’s performance in Austin reflected the team’s steady improvement over the course of the year and likely foreshadows some strong, record-making performances ahead.

Stanford will pick up where it left off when it hosts a dual-meet versus the University of the Pacific at Avery Aquatic Center on Jan. 12.

This Wednesday through Saturday, No. 7 Stanford men’s swimming will take part in the highly competitive Texas Invitational against a host of high-ranking teams and individual swimmers. Although there are no diving events, the four-day meet held in Austin, Texas is intended to imitate that of the NCAA and other championship meets.

The Cardinal will compete against 11 other men’s teams including No. 7 USC, currently tied with Stanford in NCAA rankings, No. 9 Texas, and No. 11 Arizona State, as well as Arizona and Harvard. Northern Arizona, Wisconsin, Oklahoma Baptist, TCU, BYU and UNLV will also be participating.

Stanford last competed on Nov. 10 in their annual unscored triple distance meet against Cal, where the Cardinal dominated the distance freestyle races and claimed the overall event thanks to freshman Johannes Calloni. This moment of excellence followed a resounding win at the Pacific Invitational on Oct. 27, and a defeat of Utah 141.5-95.5 on Oct. 20.

The Cardinal’s strength in freestyle will likely be put to the test against Texas, which won seven events against No. 11 Texas A&M this month and claimed the top three spots in the 200-free with times competitive to Stanford’s. Following a loss to N.C. State, Texas went on to defeat UNC 162-137 where Texas’ star Townley Haas recorded the exact time (1:37.38) in the 200-free as the Cardinal’s fastest, Grant Shoults, did against Cal.

While Texas’ current No. 9 ranking may not seem threatening, the Longhorns have held the NCAA championship title in men’s swimming for the past three years.

Stanford will also have a tough fight against USC, particularly in the backstroke. The Trojans shined this month in a sweep of Arizona and a 153-147 upset against Arizona State, two other teams competing this week.

Last year at the same invitational, 11 Stanford swimmers had qualifying times for the NCAA championships and placed highly in a number of events, including a third place finish in the 400-yard freestyle relay, and claimed three of the top five spots in the 1,650-yard freestyle.

The meet will kick off with the 800 freestyle relay at 4 p.m. PT on Nov. 29 at the Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center in Austin, Texas. Prelims will begin at 8 a.m. and finals at 4 p.m. PT on Thursday Nov. 30 through Saturday Dec. 2. Stanford will not compete again until after the holidays when it hosts the University of the Pacific in January.

UP NEXT: Art Adamson Invitational

11/16-11/18 College Station, TX

This Thursday through Saturday, Stanford’s No. 1 women’s swimming and diving will compete against nine other teams at Texas A&M’s Art Adamson Invitational in College Station, TX. The three-day meet, following victories against Utah, OSU, and No. 12 N.C. State, concludes the Cardinal’s fall schedule.

The Stanford women will face swimmers from Texas A&M, Arkansas, Arizona State, Boise State, Hawaii, LSU, SMU, Incarnate Word and Utah once again. Although the majority of the teams are unranked, No. 3 Texas A&M could offer the Cardinal more serious competition.

Jumping up from a No. 5 ranking last month, the Texas A&M Aggies have out-stroked Notre Dame, Michigan State and No. 13 Auburn this fall. Earlier this month, the Aggies narrowly fell to the No. 2 Texas Longhorns, losing by just three points in a 151.5-148.5 meet decision.

The Cardinal will compete after delivering two home wins earlier this month when they soundly defeated OSU by a whopping 170-77 and N.C. State, 189-104.

In the wake of superb performances by veterans like Janet Hu, Katie Ledecky and Katie Drabot, Stanford women’s swimming appears more equipped than ever to make a run at the invitational title.

The Cardinal last competed at Texas A&M’s invitational in November of 2015, when Stanford placed second overall with 833 points. They came in behind the Aggies with 1,166 and were followed by LSU (572.5), Boise State (340.5) and Utah (326).

This week’s events will kick off at the Rec Center Natatorium in College Station, TX at 4 p.m. PT and will be available for streaming on ESPN via the SEC Network. Although previously scheduled to compete at the Winter Nationals in Ohio in Early December, Art Adamson Invitational will now be the Cardinal’s last engagement until it hosts Arizona in mid-January.

No. 7 Stanford men’s swimming competed in its annual triple distance meet against No. 2 Berkeley last Friday at the Legends Aquatic Center in Berkeley, California. Although unscored, the meet format, which required each swimmer to tackle three distances of the same stroke, provided both teams with the opportunity to gauge their strengths in advance of their final fall performances.

Stanford dominated the distance freestyle races and claimed the overall freestyle event thanks to freshman Johannes Calloni, who placed second in the distance 200-yard (1:40.17) and first in the 500- (4:24.99) and 1000-yard (9:04.09) races. The Cardinal actually claimed the top four spots in the distance 200-yard free led by Grant Shoults (1:37.38), the top three spots in the 500-yard free and five of the top six spots in the 1000-yard free.

Although the Bears won the other five three-race events and narrowly snatched the two relays, the Cardinal were close at their heels over the course of the day.

Kicking off the meet, senior Andrew Liang led Stanford in the 50- and 100-yard butterfly, with times of 21.54 and 47.39, while sophomore William Macmillan (1:48.45) narrowly beat Liang (1:48.70) to claim the Cardinal’s best time in the 200-yard butterfly.

Sophomore Hank Poppe (25.69) tied with junior Matt Anderson for fourth in the 50-yard breaststroke and paced the Cardinal in the 100-yard with a time of 55.17, just ahead of freshman Brennan Pastorek (55.94). Pastorek (2:00.55) led the Cardinal in the 200-yard breast followed by Poppe and Anderson.

Senior Sam Perry (20.19) was Stanford’s fastest in the 50-yard freestyle, finishing in second place. Perry also led the Cardinal in the 100-yard free (43.80) and the sprint 200-yard free (1:39.50), followed by freshman Alberto Mestre and junior Cole Cogswell.

Due to a timing malfunction, there were no individual times recorded in the 50-yard backstroke. Sophomore Benjamin Ho paced the Cardinal in both the 100- and 200-yard races with times of 48.56 and 1:47.41.

Freshman Alex Liang nabbed second in the 100- and 200-yard individual medley with times of 50.66 and 1:48.76, ahead of senior Curtis Ogren. Ogren (3:54.61) just beat out Liang (3:55.02) for second place in the 400-yard IM.

The meet concluded with Ho, Poppe, Macmillan and Pastorek (1:29.98) leading Stanford in the 200-yard medley relay and Andrew Liang, Perry, Mestre and Cogswell (1:19.96) leading Stanford in the 200-yard freestyle relay.

The Cardinal will finish their fall season at the Texas Invitational in Austin, Texas from Nov. 29 through Dec. 2. The meet will be partially televised on Longhorn Network.

Upcoming: No. 2 California

11/10, 1 p.m., Berkeley, California

Game Notes:

This Friday, fulfilling an annual November tradition, No. 4 Stanford men’s swimming will face No. 2 Cal in a triple distance meet in Berkeley, California. This low-stakes opportunity for the rivals to evaluate their relative strengths will challenge both teams as they near the end of highly successful fall seasons.

The triple distance format requires each swimmer to compete in three distances of the same stroke, with the best cumulative three-race time winning the event. This structure forces sprinters and long-distance to stroke outside their comfort zone, as most will swim 50-, 100- and 200-yard and 200-, 500- and 1,000-yard distances, respectively.

The Cardinal travel to Berkeley after dominating their one-day appearance at the Pacific Invitational on Oct. 27, earning 510 points to Denver’s 334.5, Pacific’s 285.5, BYU’s 202 and Fresno Pacific’s 134. Stanford made a similar splash on Oct. 20, topping Utah 141.5-95.5 even without the help of five-star swimmers who were aiding Pac-12 in defeating Team USA in Los Angeles.

Cal will compete in the wake of similar successes, having recently defeated the Pacific 158-100.5 and Utah 188.5-111.5. On top of these victories, seven Bears contributed to Pac-12’s victory over team U.S.A., and four competed for Team U.S.A., including gold-medal Olympian Tom Shields.

Last year in the unscored triple distance meet hosted by Stanford, Cal claimed all four overall events and both relays.

The meet will begin at 1 p.m. at the Spieker Aquatics Complex in Berkeley, California. The Cardinal will next compete when they conclude their fall season at the Texas Invitational in Austin, TX from Nov. 29 through Dec. 2.

Freshman standout Michaela Gordon is making a name for herself in her first months with the Stanford Cardinal. Teaming up with sophomore Emily Arbuthnott, the dynamic duo claimed victory in the doubles bracket of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association’s National Fall Championships.

Along with junior Sameer Kumar from the men’s team, three total members from Stanford’s tennis teams competed in the the tournament this past weekend. This ITA tournament is the last and most exclusive invitational this autumn, hosted at the Indian Wells Tennis Gardens near Palm Springs, California. It featured top performers from regional tournaments throughout the United States.

In the first round, Gordon and Arbuthnott bested UCLA’s Gabrielle Andrews and Jada Hart in three sets (7-5, 4-6, 11-9). The pair also crushed UVA’s Rose Johanson and Meghan Kelley (3-6, 7-6 (5), 10-4) in the quarterfinals and Duke’s Kelly Chen and Samantha Harris 6-1, 7-5 in the semifinals. In the Sunday morning final, the duo handed No. 6-ranked Alexa Bortles and Arianne Hartono of Ole Miss a two-set defeat (6-4, 6-1), claiming the doubles title for the entire championship.

With a 6-1 total record in their first season together, Arbuthnott and Gordon reached the doubles semi-finals at the ITA Northwest Regional Championships last month in Stockton. This victory is their best performance to date.

The duo competed in singles as well. In the main singles draw, Gordon and Arbuthnott both defeated their first two competitors and made it to the round of 16, just short of the quarterfinals. Gordon topped Duke’s Kelly Chen Wednesday and Ohio State’s Shiori Fukuda on Thursday but fell to Texas’ Bianca Turati in a two-set match Friday. Arbuthnott beat Michigan’s Chiara Lommer and upset Georgia’s No. 6 Katarina Jokic, only to fall to Clemson’s Marie Leduc on Friday.

Ranked second among freshman players, Gordon dominated the regional championships two weeks ago, coming in first place in her first Stanford appearance. She defeated No. 69-ranked Arbuthnott, who beat out the Cardinal women’s star, No. 7-ranked junior Melissa Lord, in the regional semifinals. After such a fiery debut, Gordon did not disappoint as she made to a third round against 2017 NCAA qualifiers and other seasoned competitors.

Kumar, the sole representative of the Cardinal men’s team, was knocked out during the first round of the singles consolation bracket, falling to No. 38-ranked Victor Pham of Columbia (6-3, 5-7, 6-1), on Wednesday and losing his consolation match to UC Santa Barbara’s Nicolas Moreno de Alboran (4-6, 6-2, 7-6) on Thursday. His losses this week come after reaching the quarterfinals at the regional championships, while holding a No. 97 preseason ranking.

The top player from the men’s team, senior Tom Fawcett, currently ranked No. 8 in the nation, did not play at the regional tournament and was thus ineligible to compete at the championships.

The National Fall Championships conclude the official fall tennis schedule for the Cardinal. The next ITA events will commence with the 2018 ITA Kick-Off Weekend in late January, located across 30 different campuses. No. 1 Stanford women’s swimming and diving will host Oregon State on Thursday and No. 13 North Carolina State on Friday this week at Avery Aquatic Center. These back-to-back meets come in the wake of powerful performances by Cardinal swimmers in their season opener and the Pac-12 versus Team USA challenge two weeks ago.

In their first conference meet of the season on Oct. 20, the Cardinal dominated the Utes 143-95, thanks in part to the first collegiate victories of sophomore diver Haley Farnsworth and five freshmen swimmers. Five veteran stars who didn’t travel to Salt Lake City were busy contributing to a 326.5-286.5 victory in the Pac-12 versus Team USA challenge on Oct. 21 and 22 in Los Angeles.

In its first home meet of the season, Stanford will compete against the Beavers, who started their season off with early victories over Willamette University and Southwest Oregon Community College but fell to Pac-12 rivals No. 4 USC and CSU Bakersfield 185-92 and 203-88, respectively.

The teams last faced off in October 2016, when the Cardinal bested the Beavers 141-109 in Corvallis, Oregon.

The following day, Stanford will face North Carolina State, who triumphed over No. 37 Penn State and No. 28 Duke in its season opener and delivered a 202-149 victory over No. 23 Wisconsin last weekend.

Stanford will live-stream the events against Oregon State on Thursday beginning at 2:45 p.m. and against North Carolina State on Friday at 1 p.m. on Pac-12.com

This Friday, No. 1 women’s and No. 3 men’s Stanford swimming and diving will travel to Salt Lake City to face Utah in their first conference dual meet of the season.

After claiming the program’s 9th NCAA title last season and earning a total of 47 All-America honors with the help of 13 First Team All-Americans, the Cardinal women will compete Friday without six of their top natators; freshman Brooke Ford, sophomores Katie Drabot and Katie Ledecky, junior Ella Eastin and seniors Simone Manuel and Janet Hu will be preparing to compete in the Pac-12 vs. USA Swimming Challenge in Los Angeles at the Uytengsu Aquatics Center on Saturday and Sunday.

Even in the absence of these usual headliners, the women’s team will be represented in Salt Lake City by returning standouts from last season such as All-Americans Lindsey Engels, Ally Howe, Leah Stevens, Allie Szekely and Kim Williams.

The Cardinal Men will also be lacking some stars on Friday, as five swimmers, sophomores Grant Shoults and True Sweetser, juniors Matt Anderson and Abrahm DeVine and senior Sam Perry, prepare for the same weekend event. The men’s team enters this season after finishing fifth at the NCAA Championships and dominating the Pac-12 conference last year.

With these swimmers absent, the men’s team remains in good hands. Junior Brad Zdroik and seniors Andrew Liang and Liam Egan will make up the backbone of the roster. This Friday will also be the debut of freshman recruit Alex Liang, as the Cardinal look to see what they can expect from all of their freshmen.

Utah’s teams, after falling to No. 2 Cal in their season opener last weekend, will have another challenging competitor with the Cardinal. When Stanford and Utah last faced off two seasons ago, the Cardinal women overtook the Utes with a 177-112 point lead, winning 12 events and earning the top time in three of the exhibition swims. The Cardinal men also dominated with a 164-125 point lead, winning 10 of their 16 events. The men’s and women’s teams will try to replicate this success in the upcoming meet.

The action will kick off at 1PM on Friday, October 20th at the Ute Natatorium in Salt Lake City.
