Stanford in New York’s (SiNY) first-ever spring quarter offering, held earlier this year, marked the final step in the piloting process of the program — a quarter-long opportunity for Stanford students to live, work and take classes in New York City. Due to the success of the three-year pilot, Stanford will now move forward with the program on a year-round basis.
Fliers recruiting participants for research studies conducted by the Graduate School of Business’ (GSB) Behavioral Lab, the Psychology Department, the Laboratory for Social Research and more can be found all around campus. Students participate in this research for a variety of reasons, but monetary reasons dominate the academic ones, raising concerns amongst researchers about maintaining representative and diverse samples.
In its 24th meeting, 19th Undergraduate Senate addressed concerns regarding annual funding reductions on account of students’ waiving their activities fees. Senators also advocated for a need-blind admission policy for international students and more student input in the search for a new Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) director. The Senate also passed a resolution appointing Josie Bianchi ’20 to the ASSU Constitutional Council.
Amid widespread concern about greater workplace diversity, a revamped effort to create a “Diversity in the Field” program is being taken up by Sam Feineh ’19, academics lead on the Associated Students of Stanford University (ASSU) Executive Cabinet, with the support of faculty partners.
Throughout the year, BEAM, Stanford’s Career Education Center, strives to hold inclusive events with opportunities for all majors and industries, but some non-“techie” students say they’ve still been disappointed in the offerings, something BEAM says it’s continually working to address.
