Track and field runs coast to coast

Feb. 8, 2019, 12:02 a.m.

This weekend is packed for Stanford’s men’s and women’s track and field. The Cardinal will be competing in the Millrose Games in New York, the Husky Classic in Seattle and the Don Kirby Invitational in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The track and field team has had stellar performances so far which bodes well for their performance this weekend.

At the University of Washington Invitational two weeks ago, the Cardinal distance medley relay (DMR) team consisting of senior Grant Fisher and juniors Isaac Cortes, Julian Body and Hari Sathyamurthy clocked in the second best time in the nation only behind Indiana. Conversely, the women’s DMR team was filled with a lot of new faces as junior Ella Donaghu and sophomores Ashlan Best, Carolyn Wilson and Jessica Lawson all made their collegiate DMR debut.

At the Millrose Games, nine-time All-American Grant Fisher will be running in the Dr. Sander Men’s 3,000. This is an event that Fisher shines in, as he finished fourth at the indoor NCAA Championships in this event last year.

In the women’s events, former cardinal Olivia Baker ’18 will be running in the 800 meters, an event in which she placed fifth in at the NCAA Championships as a senior. Baker will be running against top competition, including Ajee Wilson, the American record-holder in the event, and Raevyn Rogers, a former multiple time NCAA champion of the event.

Switching coasts from New York to Seattle, the Cardinal will return to the University of Washington for the third time in the last four weeks for the Husky Classic, where Stanford’s renowned long-distance team will be on display. One of the key races on the women’s team is the 5,000 meters, in which junior Fiona O’Keeffe and senior Abbie McNulty will be vying for NCAA qualifying marks.

Similarly, the men’s team features fifth-year Steven Fahy and junior Alek Parsons in the 5,000 meters. Fahy is well-decorated at the distance, finishing ninth at last year’s indoor NCAA Championships before switching gears to the 3,000 meter steeplechase in the outdoor season. In addition, junior Alex Ostberg, who recently broke the four-minute barrier in mile, will be running the 3,000 meters. The Cardinal will kick off action in Seattle this afternoon.

Stanford will also be competing in New Mexico at the Don Kirby Invitational. Some of the events to watch include the men’s 4×400 meter relay, which will feature a lineup composed of junior Julian Body, graduate student Isaiah Brandt-Sims and sophomores Louis Stenmark and Gabriel Navarro. Stanford has a history of doing well in this event. Last year, the team consisting of Body, Frank Kurtz, Stenmark and Navarro set the indoor school record (3:09.38) at this meet. The two-day meet kicks off today at 3 p.m.
