Junior class president slates enter race

March 13, 2011, 5:39 p.m.

Two slates for junior class president have officially entered declarations of intent for the ASSU spring election, ending a week of uncertainty with no slate declared by the regular March 4 petitioning deadline. As a result, the deadline to gather the required signatures was extended to March 18, and the maximum number of individuals on the slate was increased from five to six.

The first slate, “Leland Stanford Juniors,” took full advantage of the latter change, with six individuals—Alex Walker, Beckie Yanovsky, Christine Kim, Joel Aguero, Morgan Duffy and Shilpa Apte—listed on the slate. At the time of publication, the slate’s petition had already gathered over 200 signatures, and the slate will appear on the ballot, pending validation. The second slate, “Free Weezy,” consisting of Francisco de la Paz, Jason Binn, Jamarcus Purley and Wilfred Manzano, had a handful of signatures at the time of publication.

Some of the difficulty in getting slates to declare stemmed from the fact that junior year is traditionally when students study abroad—the class president position requires that a minimum of four slate members are on campus at any given time.
