Stanford softball continued its torrid start to the 2014 season, going 5-0 against the competition at the Stanford Nike Invitational this weekend to maintain its unblemished record.
After dispatching its competition at the Kajikawa Classic with relative ease, the No. 14 Cardinal softball team will come home to play its first set of home games at Boyd and Jill Smith Family Stadium. The Cardinal moved to 6-0 on the season after outscoring its opponents 60-6 in six games in Tempe, Ariz., and the Card will look to continue its hot start when the Nike Invitational begins on Friday morning.
The members of Stanford’s softball class of 2013, in contrast to previous senior classes, have described themselves as not being the most vocal group of team leaders. Instead, the four seniors have relied upon their performance on the field to set the example for the rest of their teammates.
After playing nearly flawless softball to sweep Utah over the weekend, No. 16 Stanford (32-17, 9-9 Pac-12) was unable to maintain its momentum, dropping its third straight non-conference game on Wednesday evening to UC-Davis (22-24, 8-10 Big West).
After mustering only one run against Kentucky in its last game, No. 20 Stanford softball (5-2) had no trouble finding offensive rhythm at home on Wednesday night, taking down Santa Clara 8-0.
