Stanford’s Willie Shaw Director of Defense Derek Mason will leave the Cardinal to become the next head coach at Vanderbilt, according to multiple reports.
In Saturday morning’s defensive press conference, defensive coordinator Derek Mason and five of the Cardinal’s senior leaders sat down with the media and discussed its Rose Bowl matchup with the Spartan offense as well as some of the behind-the-scenes dynamics that have helped Stanford’s defense continue to assert itself as one of the nation’s best units.
Despite playing in different conferences and different parts of the country, No. 4 Michigan State (12-1, 8-0 Big Ten) and No. 5 Stanford (11-2, 7-2 Pac-12) have a striking number of similarities. Like Stanford last year, Michigan State finally accomplished its long-standing goal of securing a berth in the Rose Bowl.

Down by 14 midway through the fourth quarter, quarterback Josh Nunes calmly led the Cardinal on two touchdown drives — successfully converting two fourth downs in the process — to knot the score at 48 before the end of regulation. But after already inflicting over 600 yards of offense on Stanford’s tired defense, Arizona’s up-tempo offense is back on the field, getting the ball first in overtime.
Midway through week two of Stanford football training camp, starting roles at key positions, including center and outside linebacker, are still up in the air, but head coach David Shaw expects the competitions to become clearer early next week.
Stanford’s Stepfan Taylor and Wisconsin’s Montee Ball have combined for 9,252 career rushing yards, the largest total for two starting running backs the history of the Rose Bowl. The previous record, set by Ball and James last year, was a measly 8,069 yards, and this will be just the fourth Rose Bowl in the last 40 years to feature two tailbacks who have combined for at least 7,000 over their careers.
