Professor of Biology Elizabeth Hadly was recently named senior vice provost for undergraduate education (VPUE), replacing fellow biology professor Martha Cyert at the end of Cyert’s three-year term on Aug. 31.
Education as Self-Fashioning (ESF) professors reported Terry Castle, the Walter A. Haas Professor in the Humanities, to administration members after she read aloud and publicly criticized a student’s senior seminar paper while critiquing student writing in general at a Nov. 9 ESF lecture.
Both students are in a shrinking minority of double majors, according to an October Faculty Senate report. While nearly 10 percent of Stanford undergraduates graduated with a double major in 1990, that number has dropped by half two decades later, hovering just above 5 percent in 2010.
A study commissioned by the Faculty Senate showed a steady increase in the average workload per unit across majors since 2009 but associate vice provosts say methods were “not precise at all.”
Building on the successes of other summer bridge programs, such as the Stanford Summer Engineering Academy and Stanford Pre-Orientation Trips, starting in fall 2012 Stanford’s Leland Scholars Program (LSP) will offer a three-week, residential program for incoming science-oriented freshmen from under-resourced backgrounds.
