Stanford Athletics announced Thursday that the Cardinal’s two water polo coaches, John Vargas and John Tanner, signed long-term contract extensions. They had a combined 27 years of experience on the Farm entering the 2013-14 academic year.
Stanford men’s water polo, fresh off of its first place finish at the SoCal Tournament last week, hopes to carry that momentum into conference play this weekend in an MPSF conference that includes the eight of the top-ranked teams in the country.
It wasn’t always pretty, but the men’s water polo team got its act together over the final weeks of last season, mounting a late push that ended just short of the national championship. The Cardinal lost first-team All-Mountain Pacific Sports Federation selection Jeffrey Schwimmer, who scored 33 goals for Stanford in 2010, to graduation but returns six of its top eight scorers from last year.
