The office of the Vice Provost for Online Learning has awarded 14 grants to professors wishing to realize their experiments in online education. The recipients of the grants came from disciplines ranging from materials science to psychiatry.
Over the past decade, Stanford’s faculty has grown by over 230 members, said Karen Cook ’68, vice provost for faculty development and diversity.
CourseWork, Stanford’s centrally supported and oft-criticized class management system, has enjoyed a sustained growth in popularity among Stanford users even as faculty and University administrators continue to promote and develop attempts to complement or replace it.
Computer science professor Sebastian Thrun announced the launch last month of his new online university, Udacity, inspired by the massive response to his Stanford course, Introduction to Artificial Intelligence, which was open to the public online this past fall. Contrary to widespread reports otherwise, Thrun will maintain his position as a research professor in the Stanford Computer Science Department.
