In a weekend dominated by great moments in the NFL playoffs, perhaps the most exciting match was the Saturday showdown between the Stanford men’s volleyball team and the University of the Pacific. M. Volleyball: Card comes up short in five-set MPSF final, loses shot at NCAA tournament berth
The Stanford men’s volleyball team’s bid for the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) tournament championship came up just short on Saturday night, as the Cardinal fell to fourth-seeded UC-Irvine in five tight sets, 20-25, 25-27, 25-21, 25-21, 15-12 in the championship match.

Even with the stakes raised in the semifinal round of the MPSF Tournament, last night proved to be no different for the No. 3 Cardinal (22-6, 18-5 MPSF) as it once again defeated No. 4 BYU (24-7, 17-6 MPSF) by the score of 3-1, including a 35-33 marathon fourth set to close out the victory. Stanford has lived up to its status as the tournament’s second seed, blowing past two top-10 teams in one week to earn a spot in the finals against No. 2 UC-Irvine, the fourth seed in the tournament. The team’s latest dominant performance against a tough Cougars team suggests that the Cardinal is playing its best volleyball at the right time.

M. Volleyball: Card clinches No. 2 seed in MPSF tournament
The No. 5 Stanford men’s volleyball team (20-6, 17-5 MPSF) dominated the third-ranked UCLA Bruins (22-7, 16-6) in straight sets, 25-18, 25-21, 25-18, to lay claim to the No. 2 seed in the conference tournament and, in the process, complete the team’s best conference record since the national championship season of 1997.

Much to the relief of the raucous home crowd, the No. 5 Cardinal (18-6, 15-5 MPSF) prevailed against the ever-resilient No. 12 Cal State-Northridge Matadors (11-16, 7-13) in five epic sets, 25-19, 25-21, 22-25, 22-25, 19-17.
