Recently, every sport that I’ve watched has seemed to have an NBA Jam-style “on-fire” team, streaking through the season towards the league title. Take the Chicago Blackhawks, Miami Heat or Real Madrid, all guaranteed to walk away champions, right? No.
While watching the Champions League final between Chelsea and Bayern Munich on Saturday, a friend wondered aloud whether Didier Drogba was a Hall of Famer or if there’s even a World Soccer Hall of Fame for him to enter.
Yesterday I watched one of the most intense games I’ve ever seen. It kept me on the edge of my seat from start to finish and made me nervous innumerable times throughout. There was as much drama in this game as any game I can remember. And yes, it was a soccer game.
Sport is, at the end of the day, a form of entertainment. It should be fun, but all too often we take it too seriously, and we overcomplicate things tactically, financially and emotionally. None of that ever does us any good
As 2012 kicks off, we are presented with the gift of midseason premieres. Just a couple of years ago, the midseason was a wasteland for awful TV shows that networks were forced to air in place of their other awful cancelled shows. However, with several midseason successes each year, running from “Seinfeld” to last year’s hidden gem “Happy Endings,” there are always a couple of diamonds in the rough that turn out to be truly wonderful shows worth watching.
