The No. 3 Stanford women’s soccer team opened Pac-12 play with a 3-0 victory over Arizona State on Sunday, extending its shutout streak to 503 minutes, 19 seconds in the process. After a scoreless first half, the Cardinal scored a flurry of goals to put the Sun Devils away and increase the team’s home unbeaten streak to 59.
For the No. 10 Stanford baseball team, the best pitching squad in the conference couldn’t be coming to Sunken Diamond at a worse time. Hitting just .168 over the past week, the Cardinal (22-10, 5-7 Pac-12) will need to turn things around quickly if it wants to stay competitive against Arizona State (24-13, 9-6), which did not receive votes in the coaches poll due to NCAA sanctions, but was ranked No. 20 by Baseball America this week. The Sun Devils have allowed five runs just twice in their ten games in April, making for a 2.57 ERA on the season that ranked third in the country as of Monday.
The Cardinal has enjoyed a week of impressive wins, streaks and milestones, all of which the squad will look to extend as it travels to Arizona State tonight.
After struggling against the Oregon Ducks last weekend, the Stanford softball team faces a tall task as it heads to the desert to take on the Arizona State Sun Devils in the last Pac-10 series of the year.
If just a few of those hypotheticals had gone Stanford’s way, the No. 21 Cardinal (21-16, 6-9 Pac-10) would have turned a disappointing weekend into a season-changing series.
Arizona State needs to win out in order to become bowl eligible, since two of its four victories are over FCS teams and, per NCAA rules, only one of those wins can count toward bowl eligibility. Given the Sun Devils’ desperation, this weekend’s matchup could have the makings of a classic “letdown game” for Stanford…
Woo! We just won a big game over a top-X team. Everyone’s talking about us, and we’re all the way up to No. Y in the polls! If we win out and ABC happens, we’ll go to the Z Bowl. Go us! After last week, how could we possibly be challenged by a team like Q? They’re nowhere near as good as the team we just beat!
