For most teams, an overtime loss in the NCAA semifinals to the eventual champions would make for a successful end to the season. Most teams, however, aren’t like Stanford women’s soccer. The Cardinal has appeared in five straight NCAA College Cups dating back to 2008, and after winning the national championship in 2011, falling short in 2012 was a tough pill to swallow.

Coming on in the 66th minute of San Jose’s marquee matchup against the New York Red Bulls on ESPN2 on Sunday night, Jahn endeared himself to the Earthquakes faithful, as well as coach Frank Yallop, with a late equalizing strike that is a finalist for MLS Goal of the Week. The Stanford men’s soccer team has proven that when push comes to shove, it can get things done. Faced with the despairing reality that a loss to UC-Santa Barbara would mean the end to their hopes for a postseason run in the NCAA tournament, the Cardinal fought until an overtime golden goal from senior Adam Jahn in the 96th minute proved the final source of salvation for a team in need of a win.
