Former Cardinal soccer player Rachel Buehler ’07 earned her 100th cap in an American uniform on Wednesday, scoring the game-winning goal for the U.S. in a 3-0 win against Iceland. It was just her fourth international tally and came on the same field where she played in her first game for the U.S. women’s national team in 2008.

Last Friday, senior midfielder Mariah Nogueira was named Pac-12 Scholar-Athlete of the Year and joined fellow seniors defender Alina Garciamendez and defender Rachel Quon on the National Soccer Coaches Association of America’s (NSCAA) All-America teams.
While the football team booked a ticket to the Rose Bowl after a late field-goal miss from UCLA, the women’s soccer team’s season ended when North Carolina’s Kealia Ohai scored a breakaway in the 104th minute to give the Tar Heels a 1-0 win.
For most teams in the country, qualifying for the NCAA semifinals would make for a successful season. But for the defending national champions, anything but another title would be a disappointment.
As has been its way this season, the No. 1 Stanford women’s soccer team didn’t let an early deficit keep them down, scoring twice in the second half to take down No. 6 UCLA and advance to their fourth-straight College Cup on Friday night.
The Cardinal (20-1-1) rode two goals from redshirt junior Courtney Verloo to defeat No. 17 Santa Clara 2-1 in Friday’s second round match and then kept up its dominance with a 3-0 win over upstart Denver on Sunday. Stanford will face No. 6 UCLA in the quarterfinals.
