Stanford track and field put together an impressive performance at this weekend’s Stanford Invitational, which brought thousands of top high school, college and pro athletes to the Farm.
On Tuesday, the Stanford track and field teams had nine athletes announced as qualifiers for this weekend’s NCAA Indoor Championships in Boise, Idaho. The Cardinal men will have five athletes competing in six individual events and a relay, and the women have four athletes participating in five individual events plus a relay.
Eleven Cardinal track athletes earned spots on the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) All-Academic Team, while junior Amaechi Morton was named the Outdoor Track Scholar-Athlete of the Year for Division I.
Last weekend’s USA Track and Field Championships at the historic Hayward Field featured current and past Stanford athletes. The national competition in Eugene, Ore., had implications for qualifying for the World Championships later this summer.
Stanford’s track and field teams will be well-represented in the national preliminaries later this month, as the NCAA Division I Men’s and Women’s Track and Field Committee announced yesterday that the Cardinal women will be sending 19 athletes to compete in 23 individual events and a relay, while the men will send 23 for 28 events and a relay.
The Stanford men’s and women’s track teams will open their postseasons this weekend at the Pac-10 Championships in Tucson, Ariz. The men’s team enters the event ranked at No. 12 in the country, while the women’s team is unranked.
The Stanford track and field teams hosted the highly competitive Payton Jordan Invitational yesterday at Cobb Track and Angell Field, and the Cardinal didn’t disappoint. If recent events are any indication, the Cardinal track and field teams are ones to watch.
