Former Stanford student-athletes Kelley O’Hara ’10 and Christen Press ’11 will represent the United States at the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup, National Team head coach Jill Ellis announced on Tuesday.
O’Hara and Press, who were teammates on the Cardinal’s NCAA College Cup runs in 2008 and 2009, were two of 23 women selected to represent the United States when the tourney opens up in Canada in less than two months.
O’Hara, who currently plays for the National Women’s Soccer League’s Sky Blue FC, was selected to her second United States World Cup roster. She earned one cap at the 2011 Women’s World Cup in Germany, and she was one of only three players to play every minute for the USWNT in its Gold Medal run in the 2012 Summer Olympics.
Press, who plays for the Chicago Red Stars of the NWSL, holds multiple records from her time on the Farm. She is Stanford’s all-time leader in goals (71) and assists (41), and her 26 scores in 2010 are tied with O’Hara’s 2009 mark for the most goals in a single season in school history. This is Press’ first selection to a World Cup roster, but she has been a member of the senior national team pool since 2012.
The United States opens its run at a world title on June 8 against Australia in Winnipeg, and will then face its other Group D opponents, Sweden and Nigeria in the weeks to follow.
