BREAKING: Baseball eliminated from NCAA Tournament

June 5, 2010, 7:17 p.m.

The Stanford baseball team’s season came to a swift end on Saturday afternoon, as it lost its second consecutive game to drop out of the NCAA Tournament. The Cardinal fell to regional host Cal State Fullerton, 6-5 after losing to New Mexico, 9-5, on Friday.

Though the Card, seeded second in the Fullerton Regional, was expected to compete strongly for the right to advance to a Super Regional, its pitching failed to hold up against the Lobos or the Titans. Sophomore starters Jordan Pries and Brett Mooneyham, Stanford’s top two pitchers all season, both broke down against opposing offenses. Mooneyham gave up six runs over 5.1 innings against Fullerton, while Pries gave up five in 6.1 innings to New Mexico.

Stanford finishes the season with an overall record of 31-25, including the team’s 0-2 mark in NCAA Tournament play.
